  1. Not to take the thread in another direction but beware when booking car delivery.  I work for a major trailer manufacturer in the repair parts division so I see car haulers everyday.  I can't believe how the Ukrainians and Russians have taken over the market.  I'm afraid from how I see the trailers come in, that many of the young drivers that do not speak English, do not have much of a driving history either.  Many companies de-rate their trailers so non CDL drivers can pull them only to overload them.

  2. I toured an Air National Guard maintenance facility years ago and about the only thing I remember is their socket tool holder.  It was like a shadow box and at a glance you could see which sockets/tools were missing.  For obvious reasons when working on an F15 knowing all the tools were put away was a great idea.  I have never seen this system for sale to the public, but it sure made it easy to keep track of your sockets.

  3. Many years ago, maybe 50 my grandfather tried to buy a LaSalle that was around a 1930 from a man near Ashville, NC.  The car was what I would call a Sport Roadster with dual side mounts and spotlights on stanchions.  Probably during the war, the rear of the car was removed and a truck bed installed.  I was always fascinated by the unusual and that car got my attention then and has kept it.

I wonder where the car is now.  Mayber fully restored and the owner doesn't even know what it looked like before the restoration.  I had pictures of the car at one time, but a flood destroyed my picture album.

  4. As a kid growing up we went to the "dump" often and I always said that our house was furnished in "Early American Dump"  My parents had the money to buy new, but my mother loved to refurbish.

When I was a teenager, I found a very nice 56 (I think) Chevy at the dump and many of the parts would work on the car I had.  It was at that time I discovered that government doesn't want to help!  I tried and tried to get permission to get the car that was going to be trashed but finally only was able to get some trim pieces.

  5. While lowering the engine into my Model A at about 15 years of age I let loose of the hoist ratchet handle and it kept ratcheting up and down lowering the engine.  I was up on a ladder and the up stroke of the handle was stopping in the upswing as it came into contact with my chin.  A little blood and a 50 year old scar was all I got from it.  Still have the Model A.

Most recently I had the complete rearend from my 36 Ford up on jack stands while I was painting it.  Somehow, I tripped and fell on top of the rear end and as I landed I thought, that wasn't so bad, it didn't hurt much.  At about that moment I felt the jack stands start to tilt and down I went again, this time to the floor.  That one hurt!  But it was funny feeling it all happen in slow motion.

  6. I'm 6' 6" and my grandfather bought me a 1957 Rambler Metropolitan when I was 15.  He bought my brother a brand-new Chevy truck with all the whistles and bells.  Yeah, if my grandfather hadn't been such a great guy to hang around with, I could have felt bad.  I learned a lot from working on that car, probably more than my brother did on his truck.
