    '54 Cadillac Coupe $5,000 NJ

    In the issue before last, the Hagerty magazine devoted a lot of space to patina.  There's a strong following, which includes me, for the preservation and enjoyable use of safe, reliable but unrestored cars.

     

    Submitted for your consideration (or consternation) is this 23,000 mile

    '54 Coupe De Ville

     

    It appears to have all of the pieces, and if you squint just right you can see that beneath the crud lurks a solid car that would cost a kings ransom to restore,  but will buff up to a suedey lustre for a hundred bucks.

    Tires, exhaust, brakes, carb & radiator won't be free, but you see where I'm going.....

    1955 Packard 400, $18,500 Long Island

    Not the best photos or most informative listing, but looks like a nice 400.  It's apparently being presented by a friend of the family,  who learned that the initial ask of $35,000 was a tad high.

     

    I will take that as "Jeez, this is a really nice car.  Gotta be worth over $30k"  Either that, or the wife found the binder of receipts!

    Went to look at this '52 Hudson Hornet

    So I went to look at the Hudson this morning.   It was about an hour down to South Jersey, a beautiful part of a state the rest of which is usually the justifiable butt of many jokes.

     

    Owner Jim has a nice little spread there, with a horse and several alpacas. 

     

    Long story short....

     

    1) very solid car with a well-preserved interior. However, I think I want to step up a price point for an older restoration.

     

    2) not sure I'm a Hudson guy after all.  For a big car, my 6'4" frame was pretty tight.  I will be reaching out to another owner to see if he can tutor me a bit, but .........

     

    It was time well spent, though, with the usual conversation drifting about from cars to real estate to retirement.

     

    Good car that someone else will enjoy.

    '39 Buick Freeze Plug Removal and Enema

    What a pain in the pancreas that was!  And not yet complete.

     

    First was the removal of the rear freeze plug...with engine in and manifolds on.  Not a lot of swing room in there, but I  eventually got it.  The old "drive it in then pull it out" strategy worked (insert giggle here).

    You see the expected amount of crud dribbling out.  I went at it with a section of 1/8 cable to loosen things up. 

     

    Then I went to the clean out plug on the other side.  A section of 1/4 fuel line inserted and clamped into the garden hose gave good pressure to jettison a lot of debris.

     

    Then came a minor error.  If hose pressure is good, pressure washer is better.  So I disconnected the garden hose and proceeded to hold the needle tip against the tail of said fuel line.

     

    That worked great, till it slipped and the needle blast got my finger and blew a little pocket out of it. Stung worse than the actual damage, but first aid on a greasy mess of a finger was a chore.

    1939 Special Freeze Plug Size

    Looks like I have to pop out at least the driver's side rear freeze plug to get in there and persuade some gunk out.

     

    Rather than buying the assortment pack from the old Buick vendors, I'd like to go to NAPA and get the 1 size replacement plug I'll need.

     

    Can anyone advise what size that actually is?
