Ford Right Side Mirror - '60's? '70's?What car does it go to?

I have a Ford Right Side Mirror - the part number is D 3AB-17713-AB.

I have another Ford Mirror - part number D 1ZB -17743-AA. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The D1ZB part number would indicate that it was initially designed for the 1971 Mustang. It may have been used in later years and on other models, however. D STANDS FOR A 70'S MODEL-THE ONE IS 71,THE THREE IS 73.THE 71 IS A MUSTANG,NOT SURE WHAT THE 73 BELONGS TO.

The "A" stands for a full-size car. Could be a 1973 LTD, Galaxie, etc.

These numbers will continue in the following years as well. If the part carried over in years following it will still have the same number.

I should also mention that the numbering system tells you what the part <span style="font-style: italic">initially</span> was designed for only. If 1973 full size mirrors (either by design or to use up leftovers) were used on 1974 Comets or even 1983 trucks, then the number stayed the same. The best example is 1959 Edsel taillight lenses, which were 1958 Lincoln units stuck in bezels originally designed for a unique lens. Their part number decodes to 1958 Lincoln regardless of which car they go on.
