SEMA Action Network
URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERTArizona Introduces Bill to Reduce Fees for Old CarsLegislation (H.B. 2017) has been introduced in the Arizona State legislature that would provide for a $16 one-time registration fee for vehicles 25-years old and older. The bill also provides for a $50 one-time license plate fee and a one-time $34 vehicle license tax for these vehicles. The measure would further allow the director of the state?s Department of Environmental Quality to exempt 25-year old and older vehicles from mandated emissions inspections. Under a law enacted last year, qualified collectible vehicles (at least 15-years old) could be exempted from emissions inspection if approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as part of Arizona?s state plan for air quality. We Urge You to Contact Members of the House Transportation Committee (List Below) Immediately to Request Their Support for H.B. 2017.Under current Arizona law these vehicles are charged an annual registration fee of $8; an initial license plate fee of $25 with an annual renewal of $10; and an annual vehicle license tax fee depending on the value of the vehicle. Please contact members of the Arizona House Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their support for this bill. Please e-mail a copy of your letter to stevem@sema.org. To be eligible, a vehicle must be considered "collectible" and insured with collectible auto insurance agency. This type of insurance usually limits the number of miles a car can be driven each year. So this exemption will not apply to a 15 year old daily driver. For more details on this see this link: http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/160644.php
Azbluewhale
The bill was approved but after further review by the EPA, it was decided to limit emissions exemption to only "collector" cars. So it's still a win for old car hobbiests, just not quite as big as originally expected.
