Stop Oil From Leading Out Of Right Rear Axle

Is there a way to stop oil from leading out of the right rear axle?

I have a 1917 Dodge Brothers Touring car. I notice that on most old

cars the differential pushes the differential oil to the right side of

the car. What method is used on the DB to keep the oil in the differential?

Thanks

Roger,

Two things. I surmise the lube in your diff. is MUCH too light. It should be the same as in the tranny which is a rather stiff concoction as described in early manuals as 2 parts 600wt 'Steam Cylinder' oil mixed with 1 part medium grease. Suffice it to say a screw driver will stand up in it for a few seconds before falling to one side. Second, and this is unofficial but something I did on my '15. Thread a thin brazing rod in a cork screw fashion on the right axle such as to auger surplus oil back into the rear end while driving. Good Luck.

Rodger,

In reviewing recent posts, I was excited to find yours on differential grease. Can you tell us anything more specific - e.g. modern ingredients - about how to reproduce the 'concoction' (2 pts. 600wt 'steam cylinder oil mixed with 1 part medium grease)that you refer to from early manuals? Thanks. Pete Judge

I asked the original question becasue I was using

Kendall 999, a oil/greese used in fork lifts transmissions.

After a year of driving, Kendall 999 broke down in the

transmission.

I didn't feel I could wind a small helix wire tight

enough to stay on the axle. I thought it would slide

toward the center of the car and into the differential gears.

The wire must be less than 0.030". That's the clearance

between the axle and housing.

I don't know how well oil and greese would mix or stay

mixed, so I didn't try the mixture.

I received another suggestion from another DB that he was using.

I bought a pail of UNI-LUBE 1000 HYDRO/TUBINE/MACHINE oil.

I am currently using this heavy oil. The tranmission

shifts from 2nd to 3rd at 15 mph without grinding or double

clutching. I felt this was the correct weight oil, so I

installed it in the differential. Time will tell how well

it works. I don't know if it found its way to the right

hub cap because I have not looked since I replaced the oil.
