steering col switch

What sort of transmission does it have? My 1951 Chieftain has Hydramatic, and it has three wires on the shifter assembly, just inside the engine compartment. They are there, in my car, to keep the car from being started in any other gear than neutral. It's actually the ignition wiring, it's just wired through that circuitry. If it still starts, someone may have cut out that part of the system in a rewire, or something burnt out in the switch, or something.

Thanks, I had a slight suspicion that it might be a neutral safety switch of some kind, but I wasn't sure. The car has had a lot (ALOT)of wiring done to it and i think the 3 stooges had something to do with it. It's also had alot of Mods done to the body.It used to have a 3 on the tree.
