Frank: I don't have my parts books here in Florida, but I'm certain that cylinder heads will not fit from 1939-1952. It would be 1939-40 maximum since the thermostat housing hole in the front of the head changed in 1941. Also, the pistsons changed in 1941. A 1938 head may work. The thermostat housing changed again in 1950. The whole engine changed in 1950 for a Super and in 1951 for a Special, going from 248 to 263 ci.
If your friend has a car with a big engine, then the cylinder head from 1936 to 1952 may, in fact, be useable, but again, the pistons changed in 1938 and again in 1941 making the head be set for a different compression.
You should ask somebody with a Buick Master Parts book and not use anything that is not said to fit by the parts book. That's my opinion.

The 1928-1941 Master Parts Lists the head,
part number 0.269 1303699 as 1938-39 S40 and 1940 S40 S50
part number 0.269 1303700 as 1938-39 S60 S80 S90 and 1940 S60 S70 s80 S90
A 1939 head does not have an exhaust manifold stud after no 8 cylinder
I have been told that 1939 to 1946 fitted OK. They probably did not worry (of know of) the difference in compression ratio.

I have an all original 1939 Buick that I am parting out to go street rod. It has a running straight 8 and complete drive train. I will sell parts for a reasonable offer. It has a new Kanter fuel pump and new wheel cylinders and brake kit. I am in Southern Wisconsin between Chicago and Milwaukee. Let's deal. Please contact me at tcrane88@msn.com.
