  1. if you take a shop towel and carfully lay it over the top of the carb with the engine running at idle and slightly smother the engine you can artificially richen the mixture beyond the carb adjustment, If you do this and it smoothes out you may have a vacume leak somewhere ( intake manifold, carb etc) Just do it carefully,

    Have you already checked :

Timing, compression, basic unne up, etc

  2. Hello Melvin

I am not sure about your exact car however most cars the sending unit provides the ground for the temp light circut.

    it operates somthing like this:

you have power at the dash board, it goes to the temp bulb positive side than the ground for the bulb goes to the sending unit.

The sending unit is a thermister, meaning when the temp. changes the resistance changes, in this case it would ground out when hot.

so the 12v you see at the sending unit has come from the dash thru the temp bulb than out to the sending unit waiting to be grounded out and turn the light on if the engine gets hot,

I would guess that both the hot and cold lights work the same just the cold sending unit would function opposite and be grounded until (light would be on ) it gets warm than break the circut and turn the light off

You might try your local library for a diagram, ours has them for many old cars

    Mitchel manuals are pretty good

Possibly your car originally had some sort of combination sending unit with 2 wires or just 2 seperate sending units

    Good luck

  3. I vote for brake fluid, anything strong enough to clean the lines would need to be thoroughly removed or it may continue working and damage the new seals,

do repeated flushings with brake fluid

any cleaner would need to be somthing that completly evaporates and dissappears with out a trace

  4. Hello

I have never removed the engine from that specific type of car, however for most cars

    1. the converter to flex-plate bolts are accessable after removing the lower cover between the trans and engine

2 if no cover exists look all around the bell housing area for some large pipe plug or other way of accessing the bolts

if not through the starter their must be another way

3 if all else fails, Most converters slide out of the trans with no bolts, ( if you left it hooked to the flex-plate and pulled the engine anyway) and you could find the way to undo them after de-greasing the engine before reassembly.

this has SOME RISK due to possible seal or other dammage to the trans. If you do this method, the engine must slide forward evenly when separating from the trans until totally clear to avoid damage.

    Good luck

  5. I had a simular experience when I purchased my 36 cadillac.

A previous owner had installed the battery neg ground.

I reversed it and checked everything. The only things that didn't work properly I found were

    1. Amp meeter showed opposite ( discharge when charging)

    2. Fuel guage did not work

I don't think anything would be dammaged, no transistors or diods in that era .

What about the generator ? does it charge?

  6. Hey George,

I will pass on what I learned when shipping my 36 cad from orlando to Lynnwood Wa ( 10 miles north of Seattle) a few months ago.

You can call pretty much any trucking outfit and request inside hauling and ship as a not running car, (unless you can GUARANTEE it will start everytime)

when you call, about $150.00 will go to the dispatcher you call. the rest will go to the trucker. Your order will go on a national trucker dispatch and wait for a trucker to pick it up. Truckers look to fill their trucks both ways and Seattle is not a busy area compared to the rest of the country. If someone quotes you a cheep price ($1500) It will sit on the dispatch and wait forever and no trucker will pick it up for that price. I paid 1800 for outside hauling, you will pay about 2000 to 2500 for inside

    Good luck

the more you pay the sooner it will get picked up

    Roger
