Only the really hard-core restorers put any of the D series Strombergs back on an engine. The D series was Stromberg's first attempt at a downdraft carburetor, and they used updraft technology. Stromberg freely admitted all of the D series carb had major issues, and when the E series came out, Stromberg issued an E series replacement for ALL original equipment D series carbs. Most of them were replaced in the early 1930's because owners enjoyed driving their cars. On top of that, the D series REQUIRE some special service tools (can be fabricated) to disassemble and assemble (main discharge nozzle requires a special tool).

A friend has now fully overhauled the carb, the engine has also now been overhauled so once it's back in the car it'll be fingers crossed how it runs. I guess if it's disappointing I'll be looking for a later carb.

Recently at Hershey, one was for sale, and a Chrysler friend bought it, his comment was “they weren’t that great of a carburetor”, having never rebuilt or ran one, I have no opinion. Stromberg stuff of the era was usuall decent to very good. You have a cool car, take your time and dial it in, they run like the wind. Ed

Would anyone have knowledge of removing the sump from a 1931 CD8 281c.i. without removing the engine from the car? There appears to be a cross-member at the rear end with a rubber stripped bracket that covers part of the sump, if I remove the bracket will the sump slide back enough to remove? any help appreciated.

Can anyone advise me please! On overhauling a Stromberg DXC-3 carb. for my 1931 Chrysler CD8 Deluxe convertible coupe I noticed that there is a threaded hole in the base of the fuel bowl which leads into a metering jet. The thread doesn't appear to have been used so I wonder what should be there (if anything).

Thank you for the information, I am in the process of buying this CD8 and wanted to find out what comfortable cruising speed I can expect. Since posting I see that I didn't mention it was a convertible which possibly has a slightly higher ratio, also I now have the engine number from which I have found it is the 282cu.i. model with 4 speed box. I have a '31 Buick 8 L90 with an incorrect model Marvel updraft carburettor fitted, after hours spent checking and adjusting I just can't get the engine to run smoothly (running too rich). Also with gas at around 7 dollars a gallon in the UK I want to flip the manifold and fit a more economical downdraft.
Can anyone advise me what carburettor would work?
Would I bolt it direct to the manifold and dispense with the heat riser? as I can't think it would otherwise clear under the hood.
Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.
