  1. I am having an intermittant operation problem with my 1950 desoto horn . I think the problem is in the horn ring assembly in the steering wheel . I would like to take this assembly apart for a good cleaning and inspection . I need any tips on getting this apart . I am especially concerned about the spring in this assembly . How difficult is it to reassemble the unit since this spring must be installed under pressure . Once I get the unit apart I want to be able to get it back together without much hassle .
  2. I found an excellent radio repair person in the Chicago area . He repaired my Mopar 808 radio for $ 150 which included replacing all paper condensers ( 15 in all )plus a new vibrator and one tube. The radio works great now and it took only onr week to repair. Here is the contact information: Mr. Jerry Malecki Addison , Illinois Phone: 630/543-4549 Mr. Malecki is a WPC member and is a pleasant person to deal with.
  3. Rootsman , Thanks for the information. Your suggestion looks correct for my car . There are no obvious bolts holding the clips on the car and from what I can see the trim does fit on the clips via two channels on the top and bottom of the trim piece .
  4. I have a 1950 Desoto 2- Door (S-14). I need to remove the long chrome trim piece on the rocker panel. How do you get this off without ruining the trim piece or the paint. It is held by clips but I cannot figure out how to get them off. My manuals and parts books are no help.
  5. I have a 1950 Desoto which needs its Mopar 808 radio repaired. There are many who do this kind of work. I would like some feedback about reputable radio repair vendors who perform good work at a fair price. Your recommendations will help me select someone to perform this work. I live near Chicago but will ship radio for repair.
  6. I have seen Mopar radios for sale in various places but they only include the Mopar model number . I am looking for a radio for my 1950 Desoto Custom two door. What Mopar radios will fit in my Desoto ? The parts books I have do not include the model numbers of radios that will fit in my Desoto. I have seen a picture of the Mopar model 804 radio that looks correct for my car but just because it looks right doesn't mean it will fit. Any information on radio model numbers for my Desoto is appreciated .
  7. I assume that the fluid drains out of a hole in the bottom of the bell housing . I did not really see such hole in my last inspection but did notice a sort of slot . To avoid a big mess on my garage floor, could you describe where I should locate my drain pan to catch the spot where the fluid drains.
  8. I have a 1950 Desoto . I would like to change the fluid in the torque converter. The bell housing obviously has to come off and the filler plug rotated to the bottom to drain this fluid. How difficult is it to remove the bell housing ? Does removal of the bell housing require removal of other parts of the drive train ? I have looked at the bell housing and it appears that part of the transmission needs to be removed as well but I may be mistaken. I do not want to tackle this job unless I feel it will be relatively simple .
  9. I did locate a source of Sae 10w non-detergent motor oil in the Chicago area .Thanks to those who suggested a farm supply store . This oil can be purchased at Blaine'S Farm and Fleet Stores . The brand name is Mystik and is manufactured by Citgo Petroleum Corporation, Tulsa , Oklahoma , 74102 .Blaine's has a web site and has stores throughout the great lakes area . The stores can be located through this site. Blaine's also carries Sae 30w non detergent oil.
  10. Thanks for the information about the Warren oil company .Based on my experience in trying to find 10w motor oil , it makes sense that only a small oil company would produce this stuff. I will begin my hunt in the Chicago area and let you know how it turns out. Lastly, does anyone have a opinion about the adviseablity of changing the torque converter fluid. The original manual does not call for changing this stuff.Should I leave well enough alone . Also , Which is best to use as a replacement- Dextron III or 10W Motor oil? I have seen both being recommended.
  11. I have tried two NAPA stores in the Chicago area . All say that only 20w motor oil is available. I have tried other places as well . I even contacted Penzoil/Quaker State directly which said they no longer make this weight oil. Could you tell me more about the oil you buy from NAPA . What is the brand name? Do you have a Napa part or inventory number ? My Napa stores say I am asking for a Product which does not appearin their computer inventory.
  12. Where can I find SAE 10w motor oil for my 1950 Desoto Fluid Drive Transmission ?The owners manual says this is supposed to be replaced every two years and I cannot find it anywhere . Is there a source of this oil ? Nobody seems to make it anymore. Could SAE 5-20W be used safely as a substitute? Please be aware that I am talking about the trans. not the torque converter . The torque coverter is supposed to safely take Dextron III as a substitute for the original Chrysler fluid. I do not plan to replace this since replacement is not recommended in the owners manuel . Any opinions on this?
