Just recieved the new Antique Automobile, and flipped throught it and see that I'll have to sit down and read it! Who came up with the LONG OVERDUE feature on the National Awards Winners? I think it is fair to say most members don't know these awards exist, not so anymore. Thanks for a job well done!

This was my first magazine since joining (well this is really my second one the first one was a freebie) and I would say if they keep putting magazines out like that I will be a member for a long time coming. Thanks to all of you for putting it together.

All of these praises should go to Editor West Peterson, and of course, Executive Director, Steve Moskowitz.

I'm pretty sure West comes up with a lot of these new ideas, with his vast prior experience. But, then again Steve brought him on board and has new ideas of his own. These two guys work exceptionally well together.

The statements above are just my opinion, mine you, but we have a Magazine that we can be proud of.

Thanks, West and Steve!

That's not an opinion, that's a fact. My dad and I are involved in four other national clubs and I'll be the first to tell you that the other magazines don't hold a candle to "The Antique Automobile."

 • 2 weeks later...

I've only received 3 or 4 issues so far myself as I am a fairly new member (signed up at Hershey!), but I remember thinking, after finishing the first issue, "this is just as good as my Hemmings Classic Car or Car Collector magazines" - I was extremely impressed and continue to be so. Kudos to those responsible!

Thanks for the comments, Bob, and everyone else. I was hoping you'd like the extra information on the award-winning cars. I've said for a long time that every car has a unique story, I'm just trying to give each owner a chance to tell it.

Next year we hope to print some information on the history of the awards themselves... still thinking on that one, though.

The award has not been given our since 1987! Serves me right for answering long distance as the award was actually to recognize an owner restored car on the Glidden Tour. Award was donated by Sturdevant torque wrenches and is a gorgeous trophy. I will still try and find out more info

That would be the "cleanup" truck on a tour. I'd prefer seeing the owner with grease marks on his sleeves and hands receive the award. Nothing better than showing up at the next "stop" with a smile on your face knowing you can always "git her going".

Way back in 1985, my hubby Bill won the "Mechanical Skills Award" on the Glidden Tour in Tennessee. So from that experience, the reason given for his "earning" this award was because he went out of his way to help another tourist

get back on the road after a serious mechanical failure.

On another Glidden Tour in Callaway Gardens, Georgia we changed the engine in our 1929 Model A in the hotel parking lot. We were told we did not get the "Mechanical Skills Award" because we missed one day of touring.

It was our feeling that each Glidden Tour committee(during that period) made up their own criteria for giving the award.

Also, this award was not given at the AACA Annual Meeting. It was presented with all the other Glidden Tour Awards at the closing banquet.

No, Mr. Editor you were not "right". The criteria is clearly engraved on the trophy, however, Pat is obviously right as the original intention of the award became skewed over the years. According to the trophy it was to be awarded by the "officiating director". I am sure that term led to a lot of confusion and discussion on who (and how) the winner was determined.

The list of the winners listed reads like a who's who in our hobby with several professional restorers listed. I am not sure VMCCA had a similar award but the trophy in our case just lists winners from the years AACA sponsored the tour.

One of our most active tourists tells the story of someone who won "by looking into the engine compartment of every car and never getting his fingers greasy" so I guess in some cases this award could have been very subjective.

In any event, it looks like that a Glidden historian will need to tell us if anyone received this type of award after 1987. I personally like the criteria of someone helping out others or doing an amazing "save" on their own car. Maybe the touring committee and the Gliddenites will consider reviving the idea.
