Guest gecco Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Were the wire wheels I see on 50's models available from the factory? If so, were they available on all models? I think they look so sharp and might like to put them on mine, but I don't want to if it wasn't a valid option. There was a 55 Special at the GM Heritage Collection with the wires and it had me thinking.
Guest gecco Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Coincidentially, I think Fireball has answered my question with a "yes" on another thread, saying they were options on all models 54-56, but I would like to verify. Thanks!
Guest imported_MrEarl Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Sorry I didn't catch this thread earlier gecco. I believe they were standard on 53 and 54 Skylarks. could be ordered on 1954 50,60 and 70 models and all 1955 models. Not sure about 1956.How about it Budd or JohnD.
old-tank Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 I thought that I would be smart and look in the judging manual...page 34. The rim size, type and alternate size for mid 50's Buick is all FUBAR!!I believe that Lamar's post is the closest to correct.Group 5.803 in the 1956 parts manual does NOT list a wire wheel as it does in the 1955 manual.Willie
JohnD1956 Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Can't remember where I saw it, if it was printed or not, but I understand the wire wheels were available as a dealer option in 56, as opposed to a factory option. By this I mean they were not on the order sheet in 56 as they were in 54 or 55. HOWEVER, I don't know this for a fact. I do know the wheels are pretty on all of them, and since my car is at best a daily driver, I vote that you get a set! JD
Glassesguy Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Guys:Parts book will show you wire wheels were available for 1953 Skylarks Mod 76X only; 1954 Models 50-60-70; 1955 All. Period. Any other use is not factory correct. BCA Judging Manual is backed up by this. So if your 58 Limited or 57 Roadmaster or 56 Century convertible (upon which a lot of these wheels seem to be showing up) receives a deduction for non authentic wheels at National, kwitcherbitchin! Sure, you could have gone to the parts counter back then and ordered them; however, recall that BCA judging is based on the cars as built or specified by the factory. Personally, I like their looks on many of the mid fifties Buicks (except 1958), so if it's your car and you like it, then pay the big bucks and put them on. Just don't give a judge a hard time if you get gigged at National or Regional judging.
JohnD1956 Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Hence the driver designation for my own car. Life's too short, gas is too short of supply. I'll never fight with the judge, hell, I don't think I'll ever even have it judged...My plan is to do a full restoration where there is no more gas, then I'll have plenty of time to do it right, and I can drain all the fluids and stop the thing from leaking all over my garage for once...
Guest gecco Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Thanks all! It appears I have my answer and it's the answer I was looking for! Now to find a nice set of wheels for the 55...
