We recently bought a 1948 Buick Super. On the front there is an emblem with what looks like part of a knights armor along with other items. One actually looks like a deer head. Does anyone know what this emblem is and what the pictures represent?

It is the Buick (Buik) family Scottish shield first used in 1937 with shape altered over the years through artistic license. Eventually evolved into the famous Tri-shield first used in 1960. The various editions of Buick History published and updated several times by L. Gustin & T. Dunham gives an excellent description of the shield and its various elements... and it is excellent reading too!

"Buick - A Complete History" was published by Automobile Quarterly between 1980 (1st edition) and 2003 (6th edition - updated). I have the first and the last. Sloan Museum used to still have some or try Ebay or Amazon... Good luck - if you're "Buick Crazy" its well worth the search.
