Hello: Does the AACA deduct points for a proper period "Aftermarket" AC under dash unit???

There are several "Aftermarket" Add-on AC units that were used in the 50s-60s-70s

Several Makes: Mark IV, Monitor, Thermo-king, Sears, Chrysler Aire-Temp, as well as New Car Dealer installed GM, Ford, & Chrysler units...

I , and my 89 y/o Dad can remember some that he had installed in New & 2-3 y/o Used cars...

Are Points deducted for these proper "Period Correct" AC units at AACA judged shows?

How about newer units like Vintage Air kits?

Any deduction for these kits?

WE have been involved with the Antique & Classic car hobby for over 55 years...BUT...we never really got involved with AACA Judged Shows...

Thank You...

We have a 1960 CHEVROLET with a Dealer Installed under-dash AC unit...This was not installed at the facory...BUT...is shown in the chevy shop manual as a dealer installed Chevrolet AC add-on unit.

In this case would any points be deducted?

The add-on kit is a genuine Chevrolet part installed by the Chevy dealer when new, before delivery...not factory .

I believe the early Mustangs had similar units as there were no factory installed AC units on the first years of the mustang ? I had a friend with a Mustang CONV. With Ford Dealer add=on Ford

AC kit!

We are not qute clear on this...

MY father had a problem with judges on this issue years ago...so he stopped taking it to judged shows !

If it was a FACTORY AUTHORIZED ACCESSORY and you can document it with FACTORY LITERATURE then there would be no deduction. Whether it was installed at the factory or by the dealer makes no difference. Any other add-on AC unit would be a mandatory deduction of, I think, 10 points, but I can't seem to find my Judges Manual at the moment.

Silverghost,

Hopefully your questions have been answered to your satisfaction. If they haven't, AACA's current rulebook is available to be viewed on this website. If you have any questions interpreting the rules, then someone on here should be able to help you further.

Just to go a little more in depth, AACA doesn't judge everything according to the VIN number. If your vehicle had air conditioning as an option at the time of manufacture and it can be proven through factory literature, you should be okay. Also bear in mind that if you install that factory air conditioning, you will want to pay attention to detail to see that it is the factory correct air conditioning unit that has been correctly installed. Reproduction air conditioning units are permissible as long as they appear to be the same as the factory built units.

The same would also apply to paint. You can go with basecoat/clearcoat as long as it is the correct color. If your vehicle was originally painted red, and you painted it blue. Blue would still be acceptable so long as that shade of blue was available during the year that the vehicle was manufactured. If your vehicle is painted in a color that wasn't available back when the car was built you would lose points.

As long as you have factory documentation you should be okay as long as the items were added in a manner to appear as though they were factory installed. Also understand that magazine articles, books written by an author other than the factory are not considered factory literature and will not be considered as proof.

If you have any further questions, ask.

It may sound silly, but be sure you have any documentation papers with you. I judged a class last year the owner said he had documentation for an item in question, but when asked to show it he could not find it in his glove box. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> not <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Dick
