1955 Chevy speedometer problem

The speedometer on my 55 Bel Air has recently begun making a rather loud screeching noise and the needle is bouncing around wildly. I pulled the cable out, cleaned and greased it, but it didn't help. Is there any way to lube the speedo head or does it need replaced? It sounds like it needs greased if that's possible.

For lubrication of the head itself, I would use watchmakers oil. It is a fine grade of oil that won't just gum things up. I wouldn't use 3-in-one to oil the screech on my cat. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> There may be a cotton wick to apply the oil to - use a mirror to search for it if removing the head is too difficult.
