Ebay auctions

Can someone explain to me why anyone would have a "private Auction", where the buyers names are not listed. I am not accusing any particular person an shady dealing but to me the only reason a seller would have a private auction is so he can use a friend and run up the prices. Personally I never bid on private auctions because I simply do not trust the sellers no mater how many feedbacks they have.

About a year ago a dealer was selling an '89 Rivera on Ebay with a private auction format and I wanted to buy the car but in watching the bids they kept going up in small increments until they reached about $ 1000. The car had about 25 bids and it was only worth about $ 500 in my opinion. The body wasn't that good, had lots of miles and a terrible interior.

One seller once told me if I was the high bidder he would disclose to me all the other bidders but this information was useless unless I got to see and compare his other auctions to see if the same people were bidding on his other items.

I am bringing this up now because I see there is a '91 Reatta in Chicago at auction and it is a private auction.

Hi Jim,

I know there have been several instances of offers of a "second chance" purchase on bigger ticket items such as cars that don't reach their reserve. The thief will take the information from the legitimate auction (including the bidders names and the actual photo and description of the item), then offer it at a "second chance, buy it now price", you send the funds to a different destination than what was on the original auction. The bad guy gets the money, you get nothing.

The price is too good to be true. The private auction, in this instance, protects the identity of the bidders.

That's it,

Jim

Robert,

I am sure most of the sellers are reputable but I am also sure many are using shill bidders to up their prices and private auctions are a perfect oportunity for these people.

Were't you also the person who got shafted by an Ebay seller in Chicago on a minivan?

if you think there are some "against ebay policy" things, like having a friend run up the bid, then send the page to ebay, and they will take immediate action. my dad was bidding on a 64 corvette, and in the auction, he said you can buy it now for 7k, but he didnt have the buy it now button thing, and ebay closed his auctions.

Jim,

Don't confuse Private Auctions with something new eBay have been doing lately. I pick up many Items for my Boat on eBay. In the past couple of months this new system has started showing up (not all the time) where once an Item busts $200. it reverts over to "Bidder 1/ Bidder 2/ bidder 3" rather then User Names. The caption on that page makes reference to eBays' ongoing efforts to protect Bidders?

If this is what you're referring to, I agree, I rarely bid on these type auctions. I get 2 or 3 "Phillister" messages a month proportedly from either PayPal or eBay. I have no idea what it is eBay is protecting me from while opening the door to bidding scams as you describe.

Jim, I agree with you...nothing against "Ranger" above, but "protect against WHAT?" Ebay (X#*X+!X ) has got it set up so that you can't write or contact anyone else for any reason on Ebay unless you are involved with the other party in a CURRENT ONLY-IN PROGRESS deal (buying/bidder/seller thing).....(maybe Ebay has got/or employs phantom bidders as well ...sorry, would you put it past them or especially some of their fine executives to do such a thing? ) bull crap...period. I simply will not bid at all on these auctions...I would rather pay double retail than bid if I need something in this type of auction....you know, if you are at a REAL auction, do you see bidders with hoods on?

AND another practice (similiar)that erks me is this "bidders identity protected" by bidder crap where the bidder him/her self does not want to be recognized...who the heck cares ......

On another note....if I see someone that I know/respect...like Jim or Jon (Viking 63)bidding on something that I want as well, and especially if it is a drivability part, I will write, or even call that person and discuss....if it is a priority item with that person ...or with me...appropriate arrangements are made....for example, ask Viking 63.

I despise "STUPID - SILLY" CRAP

Integrity Rules........

Actually yes you can contact other members, just gotta go to the community page, or even the member profile page.

In some ways the protected bidders list is good because, spammers can get your email very easily, all they do is see your name on the bidders list of whatever item, contact the member asking some nonsense question, the member then replies to the spammer either using regular e-mail reply or via ebay response not knowing to click the little check box that says "hide my e-mail address from whoever" and bam, the spammer now has another victim.

OK Brian,

Below is a paste and copy from using the buyers profile...now if they can obtain your actual email address of course they can contact you...but NOT through Ebay:

Attention!

We have determined you are trying to contact an eBay member with whom you are not currently involved in an open transaction. For the protection of the eBay community, we sometimes block these types of communication. To prevent this occurrence from happening in the future, we recommend the following:

If you are a seller, respond to all bidder questions before the auction ends.

If you are trying to contact the seller of an item that has not yet ended go to the item page and click the ?Ask seller a question? link.

If you are the winning buyer of an item go to your My eBay page under the items I?ve Won section. Click the action drop down menu and choose the ?contact seller? action.

If you are a seller trying to contact your wining buyer, go to My eBay and under the Items I?ve Sold section, click the action drop down menu. Choose the ?contact buyer? action.

Reply to seller/bidder through personal email provider (if the sender has not hidden their email address).

Thank you for your understanding.

Hm, ok well my apologies Nic, I used it a while ago and everything was the same except for the little number box on the bottom, and I didn't think it would make any sense to have that feature on the ebay pages if it is not going to work. That is kinda dumb.

Not a problem Brian...I had just written you a long email concerning the Ebay philosophy (and my opinion of it)on this issue as well as other directly Related issues, BUT deleted it...was getting to a point to where my feelings appeared to be a gigantic rant .....have a nice evening,

Nic

I like being able to email ebay users, such as someone that's bought something from a seller before. Gives an idea of what you're buying and the seller's treatment
