As I continue on this '16 resto I am finding various size early shakeproof washers I will need to replace. They are like an external star washer but have six rectangular tabs instead of points. You bend a tab up on on each flat of the hex head to make them work.

Does anyone know of a source for these in various sizes? I know they would be cheap to make if I had the laser cutter from work at home <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> but they won't let me borrow it <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

thanks- Bill

I'm familiar with the washers (made a few of 'em myself with scrap metal and files) but question your description of exactly how they are used.

I understood that while there are six bendable tabs, only one or two are used at a time, leaving the balance available for future use (even one bend-and-straighten could work-harden the steel such that that tab may break off and release the nut).

One or two tabs should be more than enough to hold the nut, and that way the washer is good for up to six uses.

I believe thease are called "French Lockwashers".

The Industrial Hardware giant McMaster-Carr located in Chicago has them in their catalog.(also on-web site)

It is also true that bending only one-two of the tabs was usually all that was origionally done.

Silverghost- I just looked at MCM-CArr and could not find these washer on their site. I looked for "French lockwasher", "french", and "lockwasher". The last gave me a page of pics but none looked like the tabbed type I am looking for. What should I search for, where did you see them in McM-Carr?

I also understand about how to use them I just didn't go into enough detail. The originals on the car had only one or two tabs bent. Thanks to all who caught that!

thanks- Bill
