Guest Kitskaboodle Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Are there any pics or threads on steering column disassembly? My column has a BIG problem down inside so I would like to beable to preview what's down there before I go inside. Thanks, Kit / 90 Reatta Coupe / 86 Fiero GT
Jim Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 You will need some special tools to take it apart particularity the tool to remove and replace the snap ring. You definitely need a special tool to put it back together. There are lots of small parts involved and also pulling the wires up through very small spaces. There are some small wires, like the one for the VATS key that can break off during disassembly. I have complete good steering columns available at reasonable prices. It is MUCH easier to replace the whole column than take one apart and put it back together. I can be reached at jfinn@cpinternet.com
Machiner 55 Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 This link may be helpful. It deals with the 88-89 model years but should give you an idea of what to expect. As Jim can testify, the innards of the column are in a word... interesting. Dissassembly is not for the faint of heart. If you like doing that kind of work then, by all means, have at it. But, to save yourself some hair pulling, you might just want to take Jim up on his offer. Good prices, fair and honest. Never met the guy (came close though once) but I like him. You will too.Another link.
