BUICK RACER Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Norb, so tell what is the status of Plant 36, when or have they shut down 3800 production???
Guest norb Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 You know everything,I dont know nothing. However I know third shift is gone & they are cutting back on production.
JohnD1956 Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 How sad. This is why I jumped on the 06 Lacrosse this year. Maybe some will say it's stupid to buy yesteryears technology, but I say why try to fix what isn't broken. The world will miss the 3800.JD
NTX5467 Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I was thinking that the original "end date" was in 2009? Or through the 2009 model year?It could be that with slower car sales, production of related components will also be decreased to compensate?GM-Holden started using the "AlloyTech" 3.6L DOHC V-6 about two years ago, so that's one area where Buick 3800s have already been replaced with another GM engine. I remember the pride the BOC Powertrain (at that time) officials expressed when Holden chose their Buick 3800 V-6 over the Nissan 6 cylinder for their vehicles "down under", when we completed the V-6 engine plant tour at the BCA National Meet in '88. With GM-Holden already having changed over to the 3.6L VVT DOHC V-6, that would have meant less production of the Buick 3800 in Flint.Funny how "antique technology" pushrod motors are fine for Corvettes and Vipers, but not fine for more "normal" vehicles!Just some thoughts,NTX5467
Barney Eaton Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Maybe you would expect a Reatta guy to by partial to 3800 but it is a super engine and the supercharged ones I have owned in Regals think they are V8's.I presently have a 3.6 Rendezvous and would gladly trade it for a 3800 engine.I am unimpressed by the gas mileage, performance, of the 3.6 and once it goes out of warranty, I may be unimpressed with maintanence (since the track record is now only 3-4 years old)I believe the "high tech" part of the 3.6 engine is its emissions and all the automakers are trying to get cleaner cars. While on the subject... when I purchased the Rendezvous, I went in to buy the Taraza van. The Taraza looked great but rode like a truck (I already own a truck) we tried the Rainier but rear seat access was not acceptable. The Rendezvous was just right (like the three bears story)...now Buick will drop the Rendezvous this summer and the value of the Rendezvous will sink with it.
