Guest
What is used to secure the front license plate holder to the bumper? Bolts/screws, what size.
Guest
Wally:
I just took mine off yesterday, so it's sitting right here on my desk. It was held to the front bumper by two cad-plated stubby flathead screws. Don't know the SAE (or whatever) size, but the head is 12mm across and the length is 17mm (including head).
Jerry Sellers
Guest
Jerry,
Are they pointed and do they just use the rubber bumper strip as an anchor. I tried to feel a nut or something behind where there once was a holder, mine is missing.
Guest
Wally:
Screw has a very sharp point; self-tapping designed for going into plastic. Held a drill bit up to the body; looks like 3/16th across. I recall a friend's Allante being delivered without the front plate holder (California is sticky about this), and the dealer just drilled into the plastic, eyeballing the position.
Jerry
Barney Eaton
From all indications, the Reatta came with the front licence holder in the trunk. If you lived in a state with the front licence, the dealer installed the holder. Yes, the two screws just went into the plastic bumper strip. To support the bottom of the licence holder, there are two brackets that attach to the bottom of the holder, go through the grill opening and bolt to the bumper support.
This may be worth a try... two sided tape.
3M has several industrial strength two sided tape products. They should hold the licence holder to the plastic strip without drilling the holes.
Guest
Watch the 3M double-sided tape. That new industrial stuff is epoxy-based. It cures in 48 hours -- and never comes off. It's used by my sign company for hanging things like ceramic tile in displays. You have to destroy the tile to get it down. I used four small pieces of attach the Reatta hubcaps centers to my chrome Cad wheels. Countless car washes, bumps and thumps...and haven't lost one yet. Afraid if you use it on the bumper, it'll take the plastic off if you ever try to remove it.
Jerry
Guest
Not only am I missing the screws, I also have no brackets. Strange after owning 4 Reattas I have not noticed the brackets.
My 1st had a plate holder but no brackets. Always wondered why the plate pointed toward the ground.
The 2nd. may have had plate holder and bracket? Can't remember.
The 3rd and 4th have no plate holder or bracket but the 3rd had a separate holder, detached. Wonder where the brackets went. Are they available? ol' yeller
Buick is no longer making the front license plate holder available. I did find a nice substitute. Please search on "Front License Plate Holder" for my post which listed the part number and price. It was posted on 6/22/01.
Guest
I have a holder, need brackets or braces.
Guest
Wally: If you find no other remedy, I'd be happy to send you the brackets (on loan), so you could try to have them duplicated. I pulled the whole kit-and-kaboodle off because the car looks much nicer in the clean mode. But, as I said, California cops can be sticklers. I carry the holder, with plate attached, in my trunk -- so, if stopped, can whip it out and claim that it had just been torn off by an errant parker.
Let me know if you want me to ship the brackets.
Jerry
