WHAT IS THE BEST FUEL PUMP PUSH ROD TO USE IS IT

A BASIC FORD PART OR THE LINCOLN ONLY ....WHAT MEASUREMENT..

IT APPEARS AS THOUGH FUEL PUMP GEOMETRY IS VERY SIMILAR ON

H-V12 ALL YEARS BUT.....ARE THEY ALL MTHE SAME...

I FOUND IT, AND MINE IS CORRECT..ALMOST NINE INCHES...ALSO USED BY V-8 FORD WITH

ALUMINUM MANIFOLD..AND OTHERS

Just a follow-up, looking at the Nov. '39 chassis manual:

The part number for '36 and '37 is 48-9400-A, which is a Ford part number.

For '38 - '40 (time of the manual), it was 86H-9400, which is a '38 LZ part number.

That said, I have found that many parts given a LZ part number are the same as the Fords, so I wouldn't doubt at all it's the same!

It's the location of the splash shield on the push rod that is the real difference. The '38 and later blocks had a raised "boss" next to the push rod bushing so the shield had to be moved up to clear.

My '40 LZ has no splash shield on the pushrod - will this create a problem? I am putting my rebuilt engine back in the car in the next few days and I am wondering what to look for if the lack of the shield is a problem.

From the bottom of the pushrod which is the part that will ride on the cam to the underside of the splash shield it should mesure 3 3/8 and the total lenght should be 9 ' long. Hope this help you out. Some of these fuel pump push rods had a hole in the center all the way through ,for oiling from the cam to the bottom of the flapper of the fuel pump.

That shield kept excess oil from splashing all over the valve guides at the rear of the engine. The "umbrella" directed the oil from the push rod bushing down toward the drains in the block.

Thanks Peecher. I suppose that would introduce excess oil into the cylinders, especially through the intake valve guides. You would think, even without the splash shield, that most of the oil would still find its way to the drains from the gallery into the crankcase.

In searching for some advice on my ongoing fuel pump issues, I ran across this thread. What is involved in replacing the fuel pump pushrod? Does it require removing the intake manifold?

All you need to do to replace the push rod is to remove the fuel pump and it's mount stand and lift it out.
