budDynabuick Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Hey all/ I have a chance to get some parts fpe free. I have a 63 special. The parts offered are- A 3 speed hydramatic, complete drive shaft, radiator, starter, gen and brake shoes. Would these (or some of them) fit my car? Also, is the three spedd hdramatic a stick? Are these parts worth going 125 mi (one way)to get? Thanks also, these parts are comong from a 62 f85 with a 215(same as mine)Keith
Guest brh Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 If thats an Olds tranny you may want to rethink using these parts. In 62 Olds, and Pontiac had a horrible trans. First gear would wind way out, second would bog the engine then third would finally shift correctly. This is the automatic, not manual. I could be wrong but I remember several complaints from Dad on his 62 Starfire, and my buddy had a 63 Pontiac had the same problems.

I was doing some research and discovered what you say about this trans is correct but the guy says it works great. Since i have two real good dynaflos for my car i really didn't need the trans but what do you think about the other parts? Radiator, starter, generator. Do you think these parts will fit? If these parts fit it will be worth the trip to get them. Thanks much for your time!keith
Guest rlbleeker Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 The tranny is the f85 is not the same as the tranny in the big Olds. The one in my '62 Jetfire works good and does not have the strange shift pattern my dad's '64 Jetstar I has. It will bolt up to your engine, and I think it would fit under your floor. It would require the Olds drive shaft as the splines on the tranny end are different, the rest is the same. Also, the Olds radiator since it uses a cooler where the DualPath is air cooled. It think the radiator is a bolt in, but not sure. You might need the tranny crossmember too, it should bolt in. You'd need shift linkage also. I was considering doing this with my '62 Skylark but opted to put a 4speed in instead. That turned out to be a lot of work and I wouldn't recomend it. Starter should be the same. Your '63 should have an alternator, so the generator of course won't fit. '63 was the first year for self adjusting brakes. I'm running '63 f85 brakes on the '62 Skylark, I think the shoes were the same.
