Tightening Sequence

Good Morning Neal: Yes, there is a very important sequence in tightening the nuts on the studs which hold the manifolds on the head. This is important to avoid binding which is magnified when the manifolds are heated during operation, especially the exhaust. The proper sequence reduces the binding and will aid in preventing your exhaust manifold from cracking. About two years ago I wrote an article in the Bugle about this with the factory diagrams showing the sequence. The recommended sequence changed over the years based on experience with cracking of the exhaust manifold and I believe the last recommended sequence is by far the best. Look for the article and if you cannot find it I will look it up and post it. Hope this helps. Thanks, Patrick W. Brooks. email: brooker50158@hotmail.com 641-753-9134

I've been in touch with Patrick and he has kindly offered to mail a copy of the article to me. Once I receive it I will scan and post it.

Mark and "the other Neal" - I will send you emails of the article as I may be able to do that quicker than posting it!

If I'm not mistaken start at the center and tighten one nut, then go to the next one to the front, and then one from the center to the rear, and alternate one towards the front, and one towards the rear. Just bearly tighten the first time starting at the center one towards the front, and one towards the rear. Repeat tightening a little more, and finaly once more starting at the center and spliting your tightening efforts one towards the front, and one towards the rear, and one towards the front, one towards the rear, etc.

As promised, attached is the aforementioned article.

One question, Patrick, I was looking specifically for the exhaust manifold tightening sequence but I don't see it mentioned here, only the head - am I missing something??

Thanks!

(ooops - sorry, submitted under my girlfriend's userid - that's what we get for using the same computer...! )... Neal
