budDynabuick Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Hello, another question. I realize the felt gasket at the base of the dist. is to keep oil from entering the dist. My question is- could just fumes(no oil) entering the dist effect the points? Thanks.keith
NTX5467 Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 Typically, felt will absorb oil and also allow the mechanism to "breathe", but not to the extent of oily fumes getting up there to cause the points to "burn". IF the crankcase ventilation system is plugged up and there is also massive amounts of blowby, the vented oil filler cap should prevent any pressurization of the crankcase that could put oil all the way up into the top side of the distributor. Although it might be possible and listed in some vintage diagnostic charts, it is highly improbable to happen--by observation. Now, if you over-oil the distributor via the oil tube (with the spring-loaded cap on it) in making sure the internal buushings are well-lubed, plus over-oil the felt plug under the distributor rotor, THAT oil might find it's way to the top side of the distributor and the related breaker plate area, but that's not the most common thing to happen either.Just some observations,NTX5467
