Guest imported_MrEarl Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 THAT IS AN ANTIQUES ROADSHOW PIECE IF I EVER SAW ONE. You should document with pictures everything you can about where you found it and the circumstances behind it. I would guess thousands if not tens of thousands. and for Godsakes don't lean it so precariously against a lawnmower like that, one scratch could devalue it hundreds. and uhh by the way "good find" <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />You may want to ask these folks
NEW1966 Posted December 1, 2006 Author Posted December 1, 2006 Thanks Lamar ! It hasen't ever been installed on a building, however ithas scratches. Been lying around in a building for 40-50 years.I have personally know the guy I purchased this from for years. He has had it stored in his building since the late 50's / early 60's.Back then, He had quite a few of them. Two of them were used as snow saucers for his kids. A garden hose was cut and put around the sharp edges and secured with small ropes to keep the kids from getting cut. He said that they built round wood frames and these "button signs" were screwed to the frames and then installed onto the outside of Diners,Grocery Stores, etc. It's the Real McCoy.I checked eBay and the only ones that were identical were only 24" and 36". This one is 4 feet.Nothing matches it on eBay. Greg...NEW1966BCA # 11974
Guest Tom Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 New1966. I attend old memorabilia auctions on a fairly regular basis and these are a fairly common sight. Usually at least one, sometimes two in almost every auction I've been at. That being said, they are still worth a fair amount of money. Mint ones with no scratches, dings, fading or anything else will run in the $400-$500 range. Any damage will affect it's value. If I remember correctly, they were also made in white, which is much more rare and will bring more money. Seems I just saw one recently in a green color which is even more rare. You might want to check a Coke collectors website. I don't know of one offhand, but I'm sure they are out there if you Google it. Coca Cola advertising stuff has a huge following. Coke is to soda collectors what Chevy is to car collectors.I think vintage is probably 40's or 50's and may actual be dated at the bottom if you look closely and can find the sign makers name.
NEW1966 Posted December 2, 2006 Author Posted December 2, 2006 Hi Tom. I have been doing my homework. The 24" & 36" signs sell for $400-$500. Not the 4 foot signs. They bring considerably more. Quite a bit more. You are correct about vintage. 1950's 1960's.Greg...NEW1966
Guest Tom Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Greg, after responding to your question, I realized that most of the signs I've seen are the 36". The 48" didn't sink in until later. Can't say that I have seen one that big.
NEW1966 Posted December 2, 2006 Author Posted December 2, 2006 I have been told it is Very Rare. Made to put on Diners, Grocery Stores, etc. It's a big sucker. Heavy as hell. Greg...NEW1966BCA # 11974
