Guest Greg Ross Posted September 11, 2001 Share Posted September 11, 2001 Went to the Body Shop yesterday to view the areas they were glass bead blasting prior to final paint preparation.
This vehicle has seen 3 only winters in it's life and the areas affected are;
Rear trunk lid-rear lip beneath the rolled flange adjacent to the trunk release mechanism. The rust was between the flange edge and the inner pan.
Rear window seat-front horizontal corners. There are grooves on both sides formed by where several body panels converge. I would suspect freeze/ thaw cycles have disturbed the paint coating. Water can lay here since the outer Rubber encapsulation is not sealed to the panels around it. The actual Glass seal is against an inner flange face that is covered by the interior Trim panels. Next time you wash your car note the water that continues to trickle out from beneath the rear Window rubber as you dry the car off.
What's been found was not severe, just surface rust that left to migrate works it's way out around the rubber trim. Mine had appeared as small blisters right at the edge of the encapsulation. It's not possible to repair without glass removal since you're not able reach the corrosion site. Guest Greg Ross Posted September 14, 2001 Share Posted September 14, 2001 Tully Man,
This paint job is primarily for enviromental fall-out, Fly Ash, a rather acidic compound which is the by-product of improper combustion-Power Plant"
The Utility is paying for about 70% of the work. What I'm responsible for is the depreciation (15%) and additional work they would not approve. The depreciation is supposed to account for age-my paint was in fairly good condition so they came up from an initial offer of 30%.
The bumpers were being removed and disassembled, body mouldings off, door glass mouldings and door handles.
The paint system is epoxy primer for stripped areas, sanding out of the acid burn pits, the coating will be Sikkens products-base coat/ clear coat.
Total cost is going to be in the range of $3400. Cdn including our 15% Tax. That is just slightly over $2000. US Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
