Guest Kitskaboodle Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 My mechanic said my Antilock Brake Module is bad. So, I went to a local wrecker and picked one up from a 89 coupe but it too doesnt work according to my mechanic. (Code 21 error)Question#1 Do these modules fail often?Question#2 Is there any way to test them off the car?Question#3 Anyone out there have a "known" good used one for sale cheap?Or...where can I find an inexpensive new one? Thanks guys...Kit / 90 Reatta Coupe
Guest mongeonman Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 i looked in my 1988 service manual and code 21 is for main valve.maybe the main valve is the problem, two module with same error code ?????.
padgett Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Well that indicates a problem in the ABS, not the control module. If you have run the tests, test 7 (thump) is the action of the main valve. If failing I would check the wiring first. Are you sure the mechanic read the EBCM (brake) codes and not the ECM codes (engine) ? (one flashes the SES light, other flashes the ABS lamp). You jumper A-B on the ALDL for the ECM and A-G (1988) or A-H (1989-) for the EBCM.Be aware that there seems to be some discrepancies between the error code listings and the actuals. My 1988 gave codes indicating the RFWSS and it was the LFWSS.
Guest wally888 Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 As Padgett stated, give the car the tests at site below. The thump, in test 7, if it happens for you, indicates the Module is working and system is working.. The Teeves is usually mis-understood by most mechanics! The Brake System and the anti-lock are , although they work together, actually separate systems. You are O.K. w/o the anti-lock functioning (just no anti skid) but you have real problems if the Brakes fail. There have been a few cases of trash in the system, keeping the Main Valve or others in the wrong position (OPEN). Most agree the system should be completely flushed every 2 years! 1. The tests 2. Fix identified problems 3. Flush=flush not bleed. If you post test results here , many will help=probably save big bucks!
padgett Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Incidently, the question I posed to Continental Teves about the errors in the brake codes back in September has yet to get a response thought I just received a note stating:"Question Reference #060907-000015--------------------------------------------------------------- Product Level 1: General Information Category Level 1: General Information Date Created: 09/07/2006 04:57 PM Last Updated: 09/19/2006 11:16 AM Status: Solved"Looks like it was circular filed back in September.
Guest maybe2fast Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I have a module from an 1988 reatta if it is needed.
88blue90black Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 My ABS will not go in to the diagnostic mode. It will not blink when I run the check. I connected the pins A and H on the ALDL connector and nothing Happens. HELP!!!!!. I want that light off. It is hard to drive at night with that on. It is very bright.
