More heat?

Is there a way to get more airflow from an '89 hvac system? My heat is plenty hot like it should be and my motor quickly gets to temperature. Yet, its like theres just not enough airflow even on "max heat" and "high fan". It was about 45 degrees out this morning and I had it maxed out on my 40 minute commute but still didnt get baked out. My explorer can in like 10 minutes.

It makes a lot of noise like its on high. Is the Reatta supposed to be draftless?

Is it possibe the heater core is stopped up alittle, restricting athe air flow.

I have heard that foreign material can get stuck in front of the heater core. Remove the blower control module and look inside to see if the air flow is restricted. You can pick out the stuff or maybe vacuum it out.

I've always found heat flow in my 89 to be as good as or better than my new Honda. It does have a new blower module though. It was good, however, even before the old one failed.

I'll reply better later but Ive never thought of airflow through the core being restricted. Coolant flow I think is just fine, but the blower just cant blow through it.

I'll look inside where the modual sits. The blower makes noise typical of on running wide open, just not enough nearly enough output especially on be level

You may be having cold air mixed with heated air.

Isn't there an air control "valve", a sort of movable shutter that mixes cold and hot air

somewhere in the heating/cooling system? And isn't this controlled by the temp control

system? And isn't there one of the diagnostic codes that tells the amount this shutter

is open/closed?? I haven't checked this out on my '91 but seem to recall this type of

info.

There is a controller behind the glovebox. I've had to mess with it before, but it's working like it should.

He said "airflow". The rod on top of the controller behind the glovebox controls the hot/cold mix but the vaccuum lines control where it comes out.

Try going to high fan and defrost. See what the flow is like from the windshield vents. If still poor then there is probably a blockage somewhere.

I had a similar problem but it was in the summer...plenty cold but no flow.

I pulled the fan control module and found the a/c evaporator had a layer of crud over the fins.

All the air flow goes through the evaporator...then is either send directly to the passanger compartment OR through the heater core, then to the passanger compartment.

I rigged a 1/2" copper elbow to tubing and adapted that to my shop vac, then carefully sucked the crud off the evaporator. made a huge difference in air flow.

Seriously, what I found upon removing my blower motor <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />. Yesterday morning it was vibrated BAD so I had to do my commute with the fan on "low".

When I got home I the fan out and found this. I then used the shop vac and vacuumed the area in front of the heater core. I used a piece of 1'' flexible tile (like washing machine hose) to get deeper inside and suck out all the crap. I could see in there a bit and it's clear.

Thing is, the airflow isn't THAT much better. Hmm...

WOW...Not a good situation....the "still" reduced air flow MAY be that the coils are still a little clogged....A couple of summers ago I discovered that my coupe had less flow than the S/S so I :

Performed the vacucming as you and Barney

Elevated the rear of the car and used and an industrial soap and a hose and cleaned the coils and box very well.

*A lot of "crude" came out, but the confusing aspect of all of that work was that I didn't noticed a great change if any as well <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> ?????

Well, due to the motor vibrating (a different kind of cowl shake) I took it out again today, and found that it was full of loose insulation again <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />. Since it doesn't smell bad I don't think mice are the cause, and the insulation is just deteriorating and "letting go" inside the HVAC box. I did vacuum the heater core again though.
