Guest Mark Golding Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Hi All, Just wanted to say hi and say this that this is the first year that I have been ripped off at Hershey , I was in my booth most of the time and never had this happen in the White Field for the 8 years I was there, I had my boxes of parts out front as usual and some one ripped me off for a few Model T parts. I don't know about any of you, but this ticks me off. I don't charge a lot for my parts but to have stuff just taken seems a bit crude for the Model T folks and for those walking around Hershey. So Next year nothing will be left out for sticky fingers. The items were not expensive ( two exhaust whistler switches ) but it's the feeling that you just can not trust you fellow collector or restorer. By the way the Green field was great no more mud. 1937hd45 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Now that there is eBay the stuff I bring to Hershey could be stolen and not missed.
nearchoclatetown Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Sorry to hear about your lose. I bought something in the orange field and handed the guy too much $$ because I misunderstood the price. He gave me back the differance, explaining that I was stupid. Then in my haste I left my camera lay when I packed my bags to leave his stand. The vendor took it to security before I realised it was gone and went back. He could have just as easily hid it and said he never saw it. Just the differance in people.

MCHinson Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Sorry to hear about your loss but....Here is the silver lining in the cloud....The fact that this is an unusual event is a good thing. In any other type of hobby, everybody would have everything locked up or nailed down because they would be expecting thieves as a normal thing. In this hobby, by and far, the majority are good honest decent people.I had my Model A Phaeton sitting on the showfield (unattended for a few hours) with the ignition key sitting in the ignition. As a Police Lieutenant, I lock my unmarked police car door every time I walk away from it but I felt totally comfortable with leaving the key in the Model A at Hershey. The funniest related thing that I can relate is that even non-hobby people normally respect the old car hobby. I routinely go to a restaurant in an interesting neighborhood. There are street level drug dealers within a block of this restaurant. I have left a Model A parked on the street (out of my view) while I ate lunch there a few times. I have occasionally walked outside and had drug dealers admiring (but not touching) my Model A. We had some nice conversations about the car. Normally, when I am at work and in uniform, these same people would have a totally different attitude and tone of voice with me.

First, not many people know how to start (and keep running) even a car as simple as the Model A. On my '41 Buick, pushing the accelerator engages the starter, and it even took me about 3 minutes of fumbling around before I figured that out! Not likely that someone will jump in and fire it right up for a quick getaway. And second, the cars are so visible, so recognizeable, so unique that there's nowhere to go if you're a thief. I had a big, yellow '76 Cadillac Eldorado convertible and my brother "stole" it and tried to go to Canada with it (long story). He wasn't even out of our town before someone recognized the car and not the driver and called the police.Owning an old car is to make your car theft-proof! Sorry about the theft at Hershey. I, too, believe it is the exception rather than the rule among old car people. But some people just can't resist. I'd even wager that it was someone who didn't even need the part in question, but just couldn't resist taking something just because they could. Some people suck.
Guest Mark Golding Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 I feel I just had to say something since this was the first thing that has ever gotten stollen from me in the fields at Hershey, Your right most would not touch your car or even sit in them but it has happened. The two exhaust whistler switches were worth a few bucks but I like to know who get's them and use them well, not just walk into a booth and walk off with the parts. I found them missing only after someone I knew came to my booth looking for just a switch I knew I had two really good ones in the boxes. And then to go look and know I didn't sell them and they both were gone has taught me something next year hopefully I will have a reliable engine in my Bus and the parts will be securly put into the bus on tables inside the first floor so all interested in my parts can come in and look and dump parts onto the table. I am gathering all sorts of parts for next year not just T and Model A parts. So next year at Hershey on Pavement should be a better year. Any one looking for something special let me know I will try to find it for you.
