Roadster90 Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 My Girlfriend is looking at a 2000 3.8 V6 automatic Mustang convertible to possibly purchase. Does anyone on the forum have any experience with this particular model (engine/transmission). Interested if the vehicle model has any inherent mechanical problems? Also / Or does someone know of a good or better source to go to to ask these questions?I googled "Mustang Forum" and found a forum, posted questions, and received responses, but not what was desired or needed .....Thanks,Nic
Guest CL_Reatta Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 My mom had a 2000 hardtop V-6, it was stolen with mileage in the low 20's or low 30's, back in 2004. I don?t remember anything going wrong, the only thing strange was that where the spoiler meets the trunk it was starting to get some surface rust after only 3 years.
manikmekanik Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Hi, Nic!I'm glad someone asked about a 2000 Mustang 3.8/auto!!I owned one in 2001, got it with @500 miles, water pump died within 2 weeks -Fixed under warranty.1 Month later, it blew another one!!Fixed under warranty - different dealer.2 Weeks later, yet another water pump!!!Fixed under warranty, yet before I left, I decided to look it over myself, the tech had left the coolant resevoir low, 1/2 gallon low!!! They topped it up.Sold it to my sister-in-law's sister-in-law, at a $2000+ loss, after owning it for 6 months, 3 of those in the garage for winter, with @3000 miles on it, to free-up cash to buy a house.1 month later, it ate yet another water pump!!! I told her to excersize her right to declare it a LEMON, she did'nt. She got it fixed under warranty, and was happy with that.5 months later, she said it dropped a tranny, she drives like a gramma, so it was'nt from abuse!!Fixed under warranty.1 month later, she's preparing ot go on a long road trip to Florida, and the day she was to leave town, THE ENGINE BLEW!!!!!!!!!The dealer offered her a new replacement engine, and asked if she'd prefer the more reliable, stronger V8 engine. She said "NO, I want fuel economy, gimme another 3.8 V6."Her son, and I thought she was losing it! She got the V6, the car had under 10k miles on it at this point. No other reports at this time, but I think she's hiding something from us!!Personally, I liked the car, but the engine and drivetrain was not up to "Mustang" reputation of power, nor reliability, and will not buy one again. So, my advise to you, Nic --Get her a clean Reatta, and be happy they require so few repairs, you'll save money, and your relationship at once!!
Guest Tammy Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Nic have her read Randy's post and then take her for a drive through the GM car lots!
Shelby Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I think that Consumer Reports is a good place to look for repair history on cars made in this century.
Booreatta Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Nic go to www.autopedia.com and look up the car. lots of info on recalls and TSB along with public compaints. It would be worth your time.
Roadster90 Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 Thanks everyone for you help / suggestions...appreciated very much...the Autopedia site is interesting
