BB,

You're best off with a '64 aluminum 4bbl. The cast iron '65 4bbl will 'fit', but there are some differences in port size and manifold heating passages that make the '65 less than ideal. An alternative would be to use '65 cast iron heads and manifold. The machine shop guy was correct. The 340 intake will not fit. The 340 block has a higher deck height and the manifold is too wide for the 300 block.
