jonlabree Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Guys can someone help me please.Facing the timing cover, on the left side of the engine, which way does the oil filter adaptor face? Towards the fender, or towards the drivers side?In other words, is the filter in front of the timing cover, or behind it?
Guest F14CRAZY Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 There may have bee pix in my timing cover thread, but the adapter connects to the back of the cover
padgett Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Facing the timing cover you would be leaning on the passenger fender. The oil filter adapter faces the rear and is secured to the side of the timing cover with four bolts.
jonlabree Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 I know which side of the engine the filter is on. What I want to know is if the filter is behind the timing cover and along sideor if it is in front towards the fender.I am experimenting with different oil filter adaptor plates and the manual shows it facing the fender.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 I guess you'd say its behind the timing cover, behind the crankshaft
jonlabree Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 Thank you. That is what I needed to know.I found an oil filter adaptor that has the filter mounted the other way.Facing the fender, which leaves room for a larger filter. I also found onethat looks like the stock one , except that it turns the filer at an angle towardsthe radiator. I will have to get under there and see which one will work best. Thanks again, guys.Jon... By the way that shop Manual is wrong. It show the adaptor facingthe fender.
2seater Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 As far as I know, there are two different filter adapters, one that hangs the filter essentially straight down at the rear of the engine and another style that is angled toward the passenger's side. I believe they are interchangeable on the engine but the two types depended on what chassis the engine was installed in. I have thought about trying the other type of adapter also, primarily because even a standard length filter hangs sorta low with an oil cooler adapter sandwiched in between. Another option would be to go to a remote filter setup where single or dual filters could be fitted. In a stock engine, I don't see where it would be necessary, but it's essentially impossible to keep the oil too clean.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 This is the inside of the timing cover
manikmekanik Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 A remote filter adaptor would be great, yet the location could be difficult to place a drain pan under it for oil changes.90's Blazers had a remote filter cartridge setup, and should be easy to find at the boneyards. With a remote, adding cooler lines would be much tidy-er.
jonlabree Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 Here are two more. Check the first one close. It is the reverse of the one on Reatta's. The second one also show promise, as it tilts the filter back at a angle.
