kd4gfy Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 The steering wheel in my 26 DB business coupe is too close to my gut. Very hard to get in and out on the drivers side. How can I shorten the steering wheel colum(move the wheel closer to the dash)?beau kd4gfy@earthlink.net
nearchoclatetown Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Old cars weren't built for us full-figured guys. You should try a roadster, they are worse. What you need is called a fatman steering wheel, it tilts for entry and exit. Check out Ebay.
Jan Arnett Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 A fatman steering wheel for a Dodge has a different size shaft from a Model T so make sure you get one for a dodge.
Rusty_OToole Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 I assume you have heard of dieting and found it unacceptable. How about moving the seat back? I know the old cars had fixed seats but I find it hard to believe there is no way to move it back, possibly by drilling new bolt holes in the floor?
kd4gfy Posted November 8, 2006 Author Posted November 8, 2006 1. Tried Ebay for fat mans wheel no luck--anyone know where I can find one?2. Moving the seat will not help--the problem is related to the door post being too close to the steering wheel and not the seat position.
Jan Arnett Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 They are hard to find but they do come up. I have seen several in the last four months. As I said earlier the tapered shaft on the wheel is different between Model T and Dodge. I know one is double keyed and one single keyed. since I have have both in the garage I may see what the difference is and I will post the information.
nearchoclatetown Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 The DB steering wheel has a 7/8 straight hole with 2 1/4 inch keys, 180 degrees apart. The T has a tapered hole. I've modified a few to fit.
Guest imported_RAH Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Hi, I speak your language. Try sliding into a '15 Roadster with the Rex Winter top. Not gonna happen. You could do as I have and simply get in/out on the passengers side. Works for me with no ill effects. Rodger "Dodger"
kd4gfy Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 will probably get in and out on the right side. thanks for the input
Guest imported_RAH Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 By the way, as mentioned above the 'Adjustable steering wheel' was made by several manufactuters and in for many different cars. The Leece Neville one which was standard equipment on '17 -'19 DB Coupe and '19 - '20 DB Sedans are getting quite expensive anyway.Rodger "Dodger" Hartley
