Richard S Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 I have been having a number of electrical problems with my 90. The display only works when the interior is pretty warm. Otherwise, flares on, dims, and dies. Now my climate control display does not come on and the sysatem stays on, I assume at default settings [75]. Cannot shut it off, and that is way too warm here in San Diego. Used to be able to press around the display to bring it back to life, but no more. Is there a relay I should check before I disassemble the dash and try to fix all?
jonlabree Posted November 5, 2006 Posted November 5, 2006 Two thing to do: First, if the fan will not shut off you have a defective control, which is under the hood, on the passenger's side on the firewall.Second, the control on the dash gets dirty and needs to taken out, taken apartand cleaned with a mild solvent. That should fix it.Anything else I missed guys???Jon...
Jim Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Richard,It is not uncommon for the IPC to give you trouble or the ECC. I believe the IPC is the part that goes bad most often in the '90-91s and the ECC is the second most problematic. The two problems are most likely not related.I have both parts available.Jimjfinn@cpinternet.com

Think this is the first I've heard of the above.
jonlabree Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 The climate control switch gets dirty inside. Mine refused to increase the temp until to car inside warmed up.Then it worked. I took it apart carefully (there are small parts inside) and cleaned all of the contacts with a electronic spray, dried it well, put it back together and it has worked great ever since. The unit i spoke of on the firewall, in the engine compartment needs to be replaced if the unit will not turn off after the key is removed. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />If you need more help, go to http://www.reatta.net/docs/index.html
Richard S Posted November 6, 2006 Author Posted November 6, 2006 I am going to try cleaning the unit out as suggested. I was not very clear in my post. It will not shut off by the button on the box, but does shut off when the key is off. I thought it might be that the plug at the rear of the switch was not making good contact, but that seems unlikely.
Barney Eaton Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 viking is correct that the control can become tempermental. There is no common failure mode except it will often not switch out of the mode it is in. You may be able to change fan speed but not change modes. Cleaning the contact pads is highly successful.
