TheBlackMoon
It has been suggested buy a co-worker/mod enthusiast that perhaps our 4t60 tranny can easily be replaced 4t60e, 4t60e-hd, or a 4t65 series tranny. This would, hypothetically speaking of course (yeah right!!!), allow us to push the 3800 out, right? Please, if you have any feedback, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks all.
Of course, I'd never do this to my baby
Barney Eaton
I'm sure you could replace the early transmission with the later cousins. At the minimum you would also need the later ECM, and probably some wiring.
Lets see what Stan Leslie has to say.....
TheBlackMoon
Hey Thanks Barney for the prompt response. That was my thought when the suggestion was made. Any technical suggestions? I'm told these new tranny's are used in Grand Prix's, Park Ave's, and other "Supercharged" 3800 vehicles. What would be necessary to drop one on a Series1 3800 or would it be simpler to just drop one of the Supercharged engines in with the new tranny? I'm seriously thinking hard on this, as I want more horses, but I know for a fact the current tranny is too weak for what we already have to be used efficiently.
Tom, Stan, your input would be great, too.
Thanks again.
[ 08-30-2001: Message edited by: Consultants_1 ]
Guest
Most parts are designed with some amount of safety factor. Some naturally more than others. A lot of causes a part to ultimately break depends on how it is used. AS someone earlier commented, a transmission is more easily ruined by shock loading (rocking between D an R in snow or sand, 4000 rpm in neutral before shifting to drive, etc.) than an increase in torque of 20-30 lb-ft. Everything has it's limit however. When GM went to the Series2 3800 the trans was upgraded. This should tell you something. That is not to say that a Series2 engine couldn't live a long time with a 4T60 trans, but maybe not as long as trouble free (not sure if the mating bolt pattern changed with Series 2). If you have a matched engine/trans transplant it only makes sense to change both. If not, upgrade the engine and change the trans when/if it breaks.
