Oh, this is Major League Baseball. Sorry.

There was a time when I knew every stat and followed the Pirates like a religion. I loved baseball. Now the owners spend November figuring out if they can win the World Series and make a profit, or improve their profit by winning (or <span style="font-style: italic">by not winning</span>), and then go out and hire the people to fill the uniforms accordingly. <span style="font-weight: bold">What's the accomplishment?</span> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

In 2006 the average Cardinal or Tiger made twice the salary of the average Pirate, six times the average salary of the average Marlin. Ask him what happens when your boss can't afford your players any more, or look at Florida's and Pittsburgh's records of late. The Yankees won the '97 World Series with a team of which <span style="font-weight: bold">one third was acquired <span style="font-style: italic">after</span> that year's All Star Break</span> at a cost that was insane. That year there were ten players in MLB who's individual salary was higher than the entire payroll of the Pittsburgh Pirates, <span style="font-style: italic">totalled down to and including the team's office & maintenance staffs!</span> I've been a hockey and football fan who spends his summers following NASCAR ever since.

my uncle was the catcher for the 1960 Pirates, he hit the second-to-last home run in that year's world series. I think he made about $35K that year, and we thought that was all the money in the world!.

Being a life-long Detroit area resident, this is a big thing here, and a boost to the morale of a city and region that sorely needs it!
