Help with pictures

I notice sometimes the pictures attached are too wide for easy viewing. I also scanned some for attachment with Email with the same problem; how do I fit the picture size to be easily viewed?

What sets the picture size? Is it some designation inside the specific file?

You can crop a picture to make it marginally ok, but to resize it you usually need a photo editing software (photoshop, paint shop etc.), unless you just embed the picture to the body of the post. Then the image hosting site usually has resize options.
