We left Friday afternoon and about halfway there a truck driver motioned to us that there was a problem with the trailer. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> So we took the first exit and got out. Sure enought there is smoke pouring out of the hub. We had obviously lost a bearing. Well not so bad we always bring extra bearings and seals so we jack up the trailer and remove the hub. Once the wheel was off it was obviouse the brake coil had been rubing and that was destroied. Again not the end of the world we could do without brakes so we removed the backing plate and all. With the backing plate off we could chisle off what remained of the bearings. As i was cleaning up the axil my father was cleaning up the hub. We put the inner race in without a problem but when we went to put the outer one in we new we were in for trouble. The spot were the race sits had been so badly worn that the race had close to an 1/8" play. Since we didnt have a spare hub we just put in what we had and tried to find a place to buy a hub from. NO place was close so we tried to hoble to Hershey figureing once there we could drop the trailer in a safe place and find a hub. Surprisingly the bearing remained cool and we made it to hershey but very late. So no i didnt have time to go to the judging school spent most of the time trying to find trailer parts and cleaning the mud of of the car from when we pulled into the trailer parking. In the end we just bought extra set of bearings and made it all the way home with a very wobbly wheel.

Sparky, You can take the punch or chisel to the hub and beat the dickers out of it, to the point that metal actually swells up around the hub. This will sometimes make an inner race tighten up to get you by. Or, if you have plenty of time, put epoxy on the hub(or did you say spindle?) , push the race on and let the whole combination seal together(harden).

Talked to a guy from FLA that had his enclosed trailer rear-ended near Camp Hill PA. Seems he was going down the road about 50 mph when a Lexus Infiniti doing about 80 mph. The Lexus careened down a ditch and through a fence. Another driver that was following stopped to help the Lexus driver but he already took off running, jumped the fence and left his shoe beind.

The trailer tongue broke, ripped off the chains, passed up the tow vehicle, a Dodge dually - shearing off the left rear fender. The fiberglass fender from the truck was pushed through the front of the trailer.

The rear door is crushed, the front and sides have sustained major damage - the trailer will probably be totaled when it returns to FLA. The trailer had to be drug from a ditch where it landed. The owner had it towed to a shop where the tongue and receiver were replaced. There wasn't a car inside but parts for sale, an electric scooter, etc. Everyhing is smashed, broken, strewn about - a huge mess.

Fortunately the AACA member and his passenger were not injured. Also that a witness who observed what happened stopped and helped, provided info to the police. The car was registered in the Camp Hill PA area - the insurance company is for military service members and their families. The driver has not yet been located but I am sure that he will. Perhaps this driver who caused the accident was drunk, on drugs or had a suspended license.

The only comment I want to make further is that I don't know if this happened day or night but I have added "conspicuity tape" to the back and sides of my trailer. Too many close calls of idiot and distracted drivers.

I saw another car trailer at the truck stop North of Hershey on 39 with the rear caved in about 2 feet on Saturday afternoon. Must have been a rash of bad drivers.

I have lots of 3M reflector tape on back and both sides of my trailer. It really makes it visible.
