conrad Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 my manual says to use type A transmission fluid- anyone know what that is?
peecher Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Type A was the original hydralic fluid used in Hydramatic and most other automatic transmissions up until about 1960. It may still be available(?) but modern Dexron lll/Mercon fluid should work ok as a substitute.
Mike Cullen Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 "Type A" is still available. It's not too hard to find, some convenience stores even carry it, usually in store brands or small distributors names rather than the big guys. There is an entire section on the LCOC message board concerning transmission fluids required for Lincoln Transmissions. The early ones like yours, no problem, Type A, but from the late 50s through the 60s it could be a real pain to come up with the right fluid because of design changes in the transmissions of the big slabsiders.http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=19&sid=3bd73104c32b102d6175627590073673
