Guest Tammy Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Has anybody put a baby seat in their Reatta? Disappointed today when I wanted to take Haydn for a ride to put him to SLEEP Says I need a special strap from the dealership I could not make anything work today. But he just crawled right up in his car seat and is still napping in the garage, in the Reatta I'll take any help!
89REATTAJIM Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Sorry, can't help with part # for belt. See attached. Not sure if this will work in your 'vert, coupes have more room in back.
Guest Tammy Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Good God almighty, where did you find that picture? hope it was a joke!
Barney Eaton Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Around 1990, Canada required all Reattas to have infant seat retainers but I have never seen one.My parts book list 12340286 as a "front seat belt package, child restraint(use hardware package 12340752) to compete installation."You will hard pressed to find either of the part numbers.
Howard Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Tammy, the pictured parts, are real to the coupe. The purpose of the straps shown, are to secure luggage, not little Timmy or Cindy. The straps and their connecting hardware are actual Buick Reatta parts, so not a complete joke.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Those straps came with every car, but virtually nobody has them anymore.JWC's red coupe has a custom backseat of sorts, but would need real seat belt mounts and still doesn't help with the child seat issue.Sounds like Tammy needs an '89 Rivi too . How about a reverse Riviatta?
Guest Tammy Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 OH GOLLY I guess I'll have to keep my ears and eyes open for the parts. Guess Haydn will have to be content just going up and down the driveway If someone gets a lead on these straps please please give a heads up.
89REATTAJIM Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Tammy;I'm the Nana! Those are my hands holding Hunter in Granddad's Reatta. He's now 9 months old and we can't keep him in one place. Granddad asked him, at an hour old, "Can you say Reatta?" Hunter still laughs every time.Hard to tell which he loves more, the kid or the car! Hope you enjoy your car as much as we enjoy ours.Nanaannemarie 1990 Bonne!
Guest Tammy Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 The little guys do get busy!I did contact buickreattaparts.com and they do not have any seat belts etc for me. Told me to go to my GM dealer in hopes somewhere someone will have one sitting on the shelves.
Guest Tammy Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 UPDATEMy local GM dealership located part #12340286, from their warehouse in Michigan. And one on a shelf at another dealership. Cost is $21.17 Buuttt, part #12340752 is not found. and we don't know what is in that package. They are doing some research on it for me and will call me back. DeeBee Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I don't think there are child seat straps for the Reatta. If they aren't made specifically for a child seat, why do it? The Reatta is a 2 seat personal luxury sports coupe and Buick didn't picture folks stuffing a child in the back which is not designed for carrying any person, let alone a child.I can understand wanting to take the tyke along for a ride but what if the worst happens? It doesn't take much of any impact to have effects you never dreamed of. Until they are old enough to sit in the regular seat using the standard safety belts, the smaller folks aren't riding in the Reatta. It's just not worth it.Given the small amount of room rear of the front seats, facing them forward almost assures you they will hit the back of the front seat in even a moderate bump. Turned around backwards, I'm not sure they are enjoying anything anyway. Not to stomp on the parade, by those little ones are precious, more so than any Reatta.
padgett Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 The "cargo strap" is not designed to be a seat belt and there are no mounting points in the rear that would support a seat belt.It would be possible to properly (legally) mount a child seat in the back of a Reatta but it would take building a mount (racing harnesses usually have mounts available that just require drilling rather large holes) since the car is not designed for it.
Guest Tammy Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 BUMP!Please see your owners manual! For the 1990 see page 36-39So the Reatta is a UNSAFE car???? hummmmm
Guest Tammy Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I would like to know what makes the Reatta a more unsafe car, than others on the road.
Guest MauiWowee Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006

Quote:

So the Reatta is a UNSAFE car???? hummmmm

Who said that?
Guest F14CRAZY Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Guys, remember we're dealing with a '90 Select 60. No child is going to fit behind the seats .I'm sure Tammy is a responsible mother
Guest Tammy Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006

Quote:

I can understand wanting to take the tyke along for a ride but what if the worst happens? And I don't consider myself to be stupid!
DeeBee Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Whoa, what was all that about? A little perspective here okay? I don't recall anyone saying anyone was stupid.Putting a child seat into a car not designed for it isn't safe, it has nothing to do with being stupid. That doesn't make a Reatta unsafe, it makes putting a child so small in a car seat and that car seat into the Reatta unsafe. Big difference. It's a 2 seat car. I wouldn't put a tyke into the Fiero either, nor a half million dollar Ferrari. Is this about the child, the Reatta or the adult? I say it is always about the child were safety is concerned.I had to visit an electronics store with a family member. They bought a rather large color laser printer, you know, BIG BOX. They wanted to sit in the back to make it easier to carry the printer home. No sweat, the printer fit back there just fine but I'd never put anyone in the back, child or adult.Didn't mean to hurt feelings here.
shoreice Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Does this car have an airbag on the passenger side or juston the driver side? What is wrong with putting a child seat in the passenger seat if there is not an airbag? Maybe I'm just an old rancher who always drove pickups, but where else are you supposed to secure him? Is it NOT SAFE or just NOT PC to carry any but a consenting adult in the passenger seat? Could be why my daily driver has two wheels and one seat. Just my opinion, Kenny
Guest Tammy Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I was looking to do alittle errand running around town every now and then. Going 2 blocks for this or 14 blocks to the Body shop for a bottle of touch up paint. I consider myself a very good driver and I know it only takes one time for the unspoken to happen. I would never put any of my kids in danger, not even the dog and cat. Well maybe the cat , I am a new owner and have been reading everyday on everything I can find about the Reatta. I have never read or found anything about not being able to take a toddler around in the right safe seat, with the right safe seat strap made for this purpose. There is no air bag on the passenger side. And I don't know why anybody would even think about putting anybody in the back, where there is no seat. Parade maybe.
DeeBee Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Here is how you can do it safely, I just tried it (sans child) The problem I see is that the front seat does not lock into position, it can fold from just inertia. When an adult is seated there, their body actually snaps the seat belt during impact, preventing the seat from collapsing. Most child seats are shorter and the way the seat belts usually go into them, the inertia locking systems sometimes don't work very well. Being shorter than most adults, the seat belt makes a sharper downward turn and this leaves slack because of that. Making it tight buy pulling on it doesn't help.If you face the child seat rearward it doesn't take much of a collapse for those little legs to get smunched. You can try this: use one of those locking clasps on the seat belt after you run it through the car seat (child seat facing forward) That will bypass the inertial locking system so that it is always locked. In this way, a small bump can't result in the child seat moving forward and then the regular seat collapsing. Get a real good locking clasp. They can be a PITA to use but they do work to prevent exactly what the Reatta seats will do. It is critical to put the locking clasp on right or you can think it locks the belt but does not. It has to lock from behind the hanger which is above the right shoulder. Locking below only it does nothing. Also lock the lap portion so you'll need two locking clasps. Once you get used to using them it isn't such a chore.
manikmekanik Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Relax, Tammy! The Reatta IS a safe car, and wth the right child seat restraints, it's as safe as any other car for a front seat passenger, at any age. Some local, or state laws require child seats to be in back.I'm sure you're a responsible mother who would rather die than place any child in undue risk, especially yours.I gotta admit, the photo of the infant in the luggage strap IS funny, knowing Grandma would NEVER drive around with Jr. like that. When my sister was a baby, my parents would take her for a ride around the block to get her to sleep, when she was over-tired. After awhile, Dad figured out it was he sound and vibration of the car that did the trick, and from then on, they just took her to the car, and sat in the driveway, car running, until she fell asleep. No child seat needed, if the car does'nt move, but easier to carry them to bed, (without waking them up), in it!
Guest Tammy Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I'm waiting on the "infant/child restraint belt and hardware" which was made for the Reatta so I can put Haydn in his forward facing car seat. The locking clips, here in Wis, don't work with the Reatta. Which is why I had posted in the 1st place.Normally when Haydn doesn't go to sleep, like last night I'm walking him in the stroller. Holden did get a few rides to help him along for night night
89REATTAJIM Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I gotta admit, the photo of the infant in the luggage strap IS funny, knowing Grandma would NEVER drive around with Jr. like that. Thanks Randy, the picture was posted a few mos ago as a reply to Reattas with back seats. I assumed that everyone would realize that it was done as a joke. Anyone should realize that if the cargo straps were used as in the pic, the child would slide to the right or left when going around corners. That would require more pillows. My first comment to Hunter, when we first met, he was about two hours old: "Hi, I'm your Granddad, Can you say Reatta??" Just hope we can use it as a bonding factor and he will be happy to inherit it when the time comes.
