1937hd45 Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Antique Automoble arrived today, what a GREAT suprise to see that old Cy LaTour Race Car photo!!! I forgot I'd lent that to Bill Smith years ago, glad he made a copy! I sold the original to cover some of the kids college bills, never made a copy and have regretted parting with it. The car on the far right is the 1908 Mercedes factory Race Car that Lautenschlager won the 1908 Dieppe GP in. Next owner was Spencer Wishart from Philadelphia who drove it to a 4th place finish in the First Indy 500 in 1911. It was sold to Walter Lezotte who wrecked it on a track in Pennsylvania and was killed, the remains were then bought by Larry Beals. Beals installed the Hisso Aircraft V8 and raced it as you see #24 in the photo. I bought the original photo from a dealer who got it from Larry Beals. The car was in the Tompson collection in Ohio until 8-10 years ago. It is in Germany now with plans to restore it to its original 1908 factory appearance. Personally I wish it remained untouched as it was, a REAL EARLY American built HOT ROD. That original photo hung on my wall for well over 30 years, I did get to see the Hisso powered Mercedes before it left the country, and got to sit behind the wheel, what a thrill! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
1937hd45 Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 Here is a link to the HISSO powere race car site.Larry Beals - #24 Beals Hispano-Suiza ? Mid-1920?s http://winfield.50megs.com/Hisso.htm" target="_blank">Larhttp://winfield.50megs.com/Hisso.htm
1937hd45 Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 If you go to the HISSO Site you will see that car #6 in the photo is the Kennedy Dynamite HISSO. There is a photo of what I always refer to as "Larry Beals Hisso" #24, it once carried the #37. So the 1908 Factory GP that Lautenschlager won the Dieppe GP in, Wishart finished 4th in at in INDY in 1911, Lezotte lost his life in, Beals ran as #37 and #24 with the HISSO are all the same car. Research is so much fun! Wonder what the AACA Library is going to need as a donation to get a copy of that photo? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> This is a photo of the car new in 1908

Steve Moskowitz Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Doug, I'm not touching that post! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Bob, copy services for all our Library materials are available for a small fee. The photo you want sits in my office. I found it going thru some old files and sent it to West. I could get a copy made for you.
1937hd45 Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 Hi Steve, That is really nice to know that a photo that ment so much to me is on the wall of your office. It is one thing I regret parting with. Take a close look at the Larry Beals car #24 last on the right, it sold in a sealed bid auction without the hood or cowl section for 1.2 Million. Wonder what the correct engine, radiator and bodywork will add to the restoration cost?
Steve Moskowitz Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 West is going to contact you...his idea...you will be happy! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Steve Moskowitz Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Actually Bob it is still in a tube on my counter...I sent it to West to be used since I thought it was such an extraordinary photo. I can tell why you like it so much, West has plans to send you the CD of the photo and you can reproduce it yourself. I DO plan on framing this for our building though. Thanks!
