Guest nailheadgs Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 A little help for a beginner here.On a 65/6 skylark GS w/ auto, floor shift & console how is the console attached to the floor? I found two screws in the storage compartment at the rear of the console but not the attachment point in front of the shifter. Anyone had one of these out recently? Can anyone tell me if the transmission can be unbolted from the engine without removing the transmission on a 65/6 Skylark GS 401/auto? It seems like the bolts holding the trans to the block are up against the firewall with no room for tools & are torqued to something like 50 ft-lbs. Anyone done this recently and have suggestions? Thanks in advance to anyone willing to take the time to respond.Nailheadgs
JohnD1956 Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 These things may be tight, but usually they are built with some capability of service in mind. I used to have a 66 GS with the 4 speed and had to do the clutch. Things went smoothly.I would suggest you could leave the tranny in the car but it is not adviseable. You would want to support the front of the trans otherwise it will twist the tranny mount when the engine is removed.
Guest Albert Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 what sometimes helps is to leave the transmission bell housing bolts till the last, lift the motor and remove the motor mounts, and lower the motor to the cross member, then it gives you more room to get them out, then but a jack under the front of the transmission, with a block of wood in between, rais both and them seperate.
