Willhelm Reichert
There is a possibilty of rebuilding these if enough are interested. It would not be cheap since the tools were trashed by Getrag and there are no service manuals.
Guest Anthenium
Well, mine has an "Iffy" 1st gear synchro. I shift without the use of the clutch once I get moving from a Dead Stop. And unless I'm going <10 MPH, it Grinds rather than easing down into 1st. It does this with, or without the clutch. Otherwise my 284 seems pretty solid... 89TC-16V
mine has Iffy reverse only because i havent tried to see if its something easy to fix yet, my shifter is really tight at the moment
TwinCamFan
Willhelm,You might try tearing into one of the 284's before you decide you can fix them. Myself and the best FWD Chrysler trans guy on the west coast tore into one I had. After a few hours, we gave up <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />They are nothing like 520/523/525/555/568 transmissions inside! Special tooling required is an understatement... I gave up and went to a 523/OBX <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />Alan
Willhelm Reichert
Now you did it. I'm stupid, stubborn and crazy (Looneytuner on td and tm.com). You want to ship me the parts???I have restored reproducing grand pianos and 150 year old grands with no documentation. For fun.
TimW
Uh oh, the can of worms has been opened! They really cant be all that bad to work on.. Someone had to put them together in the first place right?
Willhelm Reichert
I'm 100% German and so is Getrag. I know the German piano factories. They don't care if you buy the merchandise, as long as it's the best. Yes it wold be a nightmare in the worst German sense probably.
TwinCamFan
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Uh oh, the can of worms has been opened! They really cant be all that bad to work on.. Someone had to put them together in the first place right? </div></div>We counted at least four assembly steps that would require a special tooling "jig" to make it work. Sure if it is a hooby of someone who happens to be an expert machinist AND loves to make parts for special projects... Some componants even had to be oven heated to just the right temp for assembly, too cool-no worky, too hot-junk parts <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> We have all heated up bearing recievers and iced the races in the freezer to make them happy to assemble, my understanding (from a factory trans tech) is this is much more exacting than that. Still not detered, I contacted four different divisions of Getrag North America for ANY kind of assistance. I heard back from exactly zero divisions. Heck, check their website, they don't even admit to building the 284 and they list transmissions being built way before the 80's.Remember neither Chrysler factory techs nor GM techs (in the case of the 284 DOHC 91-93 Lumina trans) were allowed to open or service the trans in any way other than fluids or external pieces <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />Alan
Guest Anthenium
Are these 284 tranny's Limited Slip? I've noticed that if I take off HARD, but not breaking the tires loose, the car feels like it's shifting back and forth, almost like the power is alternating from side to side. I think the steering is a bit loose, and I have a Shop Manual enRoute. 1st order of business...But are these Beauties LSD's?Smashbandits have Dis-Banded...Time to upgrade my Signature...Madd1
Willhelm Reichert
Nope you have to upgrade with the Quaife or OBX. they are torque biasing differentials? the fwd doesn't like the normal type used for rwd. Alabama Man makes the friction type for about 250 The quaife is 450 plus $100 for an adapter for the turbo trans. They are really for the Mopar SRT line.I don't know what kind of dif the 284 has. It might not even be possible. Hemi would have that answer. It sounds like you need to get the front end checked.
