fluids and the 55

I did a search but didn't really get the information I was looking for.

I gleaned that many use 15W40 Rotella in the 50's cars upon oil changes and I understand the reason for not using current oils until after the rebuild. As much gunk as this engine has on it, I'd be surprised if the oil was ever changed...I couldn't pressure wash it off <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

How about transmission fluid? My manual calls for type A, but obviously that's not made any more. I picked up DexronIII as it's stated that it's backward compatible all the way back to A. However, in reading, is type F what I should be using even though it's GM?

Thanks as always,

JD

I've always read/understood that Type F was for Ford products only ( and was specifically created for Ford auto-trannies)... suposedly Type F has different additives that make the clutches "grab" better and also a "seal-swell additive"...

I have also read/understood that Any of the Dexron ATF's are drop-in replacements for "Automatic transmission fluid Type A". I have been using Dexron in my MoPar auto trannies from the '50s for twenty years now with no issues.

I double-checked the Type A = Dexron substitution last year before filling the Torqueflite in my '60 Chrysler, and I know that at least Valvoline confirms that Dexron I/II/III are replacements for Type A...

You definitely don't want to put the "wrong" fluid in a Hydramatic...

Thanks Frank. I put Dexron III in the tranny and he moved like new.

No oil filter but will put it on tonight and the 15w40 in the engine.
