0ddi0 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 My Reatta died . I was driving, doin about 30MPH and it just stopped. I tested the alternator, starter, and battery and they are all fine so I'm wondering what else could have happened. Maybe my timing chain or fuel pump? Any thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.Kevin!
Guest F14CRAZY Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Is the Service Engine Soon light on? I'd go into Diagnostic Mode (Reatta.net, under Diagnostics and/or Documentation) and see if any codes are present.Does the motor turn over?
0ddi0 Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 The service engine light comes on, yes. I have to leave for work now but I'll check the diagnostics when I get off tonight. The motor isn't turning over and tomorrow I'm going to pull a fuel line and see if it is getting gas, if not I suppose pulling the valve cover and checking the cam is my next step unless there's something else I should check first. Thanks
0ddi0 Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 One more thing. I have an 89 and there's not much documentation on the diagnostics so if anyone can help give me instructions on how to check them that would be great.Kevin!
Guest CL_Reatta Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 A little off topic but this got me thinking that there must be quite a few people out there that think our cars are junk since they seem to like to show off their problems in the middle of traffic.......Good luck with fixing your Reatta
Guest F14CRAZY Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Link to Reatta.net. Click the 1988 manual at the top. All you need to know is in there.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 If it isn't turning over at all, I'd leave the fuel system alone for right now
Guest CL_Reatta Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 When my car stalled out on gratiot back in febuary it turned out to be the ignition module overheating, if you wait about 1/2 an hour with the hood up it would start again. Maybe try this if you havent already.
Guest wally888 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I had a bad battery, checked O.K. twice! BUT was bad=car would not start=jumped, started then died several times. But no SES light on.
Howard Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I agree with F14. If the car is not turning over, then there is a starter problem or a battery or related electrical problem. The fact the car just stopped and won't turn over, sounds like an electical problem.
0ddi0 Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 OK guys, I got in the car and it started up. I am now sure it's not the battery or anything electrical. Now it seems to be running rather roughly and I have a rattle coming from under the car. There is also this weird smell. I think it could be my Catalytic converter. Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to change this on a reatta? Do I need to weld anything or is it a bolt on?
Reatta45 Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Your cc is probably ok ? It sounds like you are running rich, thus the smell. Check the front engine pulley (harmonic damper), it may be the source of your problem? To answer your question, the cc is welded to the pipe. KennyV.
0ddi0 Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 Well, for future reference, the cat is welded on. I cut off the old one and can't find anywhere that has the direct fit cat so I'm gonna try the universal one. If this doesn't do it maybe the muffler is clogged so I'll try to blow that out with the air hose. Now, if that isn't the problem and I just wasted all this time and money on the cat, can anyone think of why it would shake so bad and have no power? Gas pedal floored for a block and I got up to 30MPH.
0ddi0 Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 hehe, think we posted at the same time kenny
padgett Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Are a number of things that could cause this. First, are there any diagnostic codes ? Second, what is your temp reading ? Need to start with diagnostics. See www.reatta.net/diagnostics.html
0ddi0 Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 OK, I finally got it. It was the ignition module and the coil pack. Thank you all for your input, I know it's hard to diagnose a problem over the net but I appreciate all of your efforts.ThanksKevin!
