Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I got thinking... if the bezel was machined out a bit and maybe move the climate control upward a bit, couldnt a 2 DIN radio head unit be installed in a '90-91?
Guest spyhunter2k Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 This is an interesting concept. I still have my dash trim off. I'll look around and see if it's possible. There are some pretty cool double din CD/DVD/stereo players that have a built-in monitor, and would be a cool way of introducing a monitor into a 90-91. Honestly, though, it will probably be much easier to get a din-sized player with a motorized flip-up monitor. It just wouldn't look quite as nice as a permanently displayed monitor.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Lemme know what you find spyhunter. I haven't had a chance to take a look at our other cars, and am up north right now (northern Michigan). A Pioneer AVIC-N1 would be cool, but to me, an AVIC-D1 or a Kenwood Excelon would be awesome. Maybe the climate control does have to be moved up.
Guest spyhunter2k Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 It looks like the ECC could be moved up about .5" and the factory radio can't be moved down at all, so it doesn't appear that you have enough to get a double din unit in. The ECC could possibly be relocated to the area just in front of the center armrest (barely). Then you'd have the room. I still believe a DIN unit with a motorized flip-up monitor is the way to go. I removed my slave CD player (wasn't working) and cut away the plastic surround so that it is just a frame, and will be mounting a monitor there (still trying to figure out how big a screen will fit down there--I'm thinking 6.5"?).Incidentally, to fit my aftermarket CD player in, I had to cut the plastic backing immediately behind the radio away to give the clearance needed. Otherwise, I would have had to adjust the Metra dash kit so that the CD player protruded out an inch or more, and that wasn't happening--I wanted a flush look.Should've seen the look on my wife's face when she say me in the car with a dremel and bits of black plastic flying out from my inside the dash. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
