FireballV8 Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 I finally switched over to base coat clear coat system. I am using PPG products, my clear is 2010. My question is I painted the base coat and then clear coated it after the specified time, but I rushed doing the clear and my coat isn't very even is a few spots. Can this be sanded and cleared again or do I need to strip off the clear and base coat and start from scratch?? Also what sandpaper grit should I use if only sanding the clear to reapply more clear?ThanksSteve
Guest imported_MrEarl Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Steve,For paint questions like this I always hit the Eastwood Forum first. Here's a post that might help Eastwood
pirate Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Yes, clear coat can be sanded very well but wait at least a week for the clear to cure. For aplying more clear use no coarser paper than 400 grit but 600 grit will asure no sanding marks in the finish. Use wet-dry paper and mix a little dish soap and water together and and continuously keeping the paper dipped in this water. Use a block on the paper where the surfaces are flat enough to accept the block. Paint supply stores supply a slightly flexable block that works good. I hope you have put on at the very least, 2 coats of clear. I can't stress the importance to mush about sanding through the clear. Be careful and patient. If you sand thru the clear and into the base, then you have to re-aply more base to the entire panel or you will have a "funny" color spot where you sanded into the base. wash and rinse the car good after you are done.
FireballV8 Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 Guys thanks for all the help, I like the Eastwood website. The new PPG products are very poor, after I sanded the run and had it flat, white dots (very small) appeared in the clear. I asked our local restorer about this and took the panel in to show him and he said it was the clear, the 2010 has this quality to it. So I just repainted everything and finally color sanded and buffed it last night. It looks good now, but it was a lot of work. It goes to show you that never rush a job. Thanks Again.
pirate Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 PPG products are like most suppliers, they have the good stuff and they have the cheap stuff. I have used the PPG 2002 clear and found it very superior to other brands of clear. A little more expensive and more work to sand and buff tho.
