Guest crtnrds Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Has anyone ever replaced the SES bulb? The book calls for a #161 but that bulb is about 4 times the size of the bulb in my '90. Also it seems to be soldered into the circuit board, is it? Also, from what it says in the FSM that light is an integral part of the system & if it does not come on with key on, before start, it will not start & diagnostic functions won't work. Is this correct? Any help would be appreciated.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I replaced my yellow ABS light with a 194 bulb (it didn't come with one...). They aren't soldered and simply pull out and push in
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 My bad. At least thats how an '89 is. A '90 or 91 might not be that easy
Howard Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I have an 89 whose SES light did burn out. I did get a code on my CRT, but that was it. The car ran fine. I posted a thread about the replacement. I'm not sure when it was, but I think it was Feb. or Mar. of this year. Maybe you could do a search.
Guest crtnrds Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 It seems that the '90s are different. On the base of the bulb it's marked DL338014v80ma. I THINK it plugs into two "prongs" that are soldered to the circuit board. Anyone confirm this?
Guest crtnrds Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Well, Buick dealer told me they can't get it/couldn't sell it to me. Told me to call the local Delco repair shop who told me they couldn't sell it to me either & that they could install it (soldered into circuit board) but would have to charge me one hour labor, $65. He sugested that I un-solder the washer fluid bulb & solder it in place of the SES bulb. So that's what I guess I'll do. What a PITA.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Hmm, it can't be that bad. Have you contacted a local electronics supply shop?
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Maybe Radio Shack about 20 years ago <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. You can try them though, but their selection of real electronic components was replaced by consumer electronic appliances. You should have a local shop that sells the stuff radio shack used to sell.
Guest crtnrds Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Maybe RS can at least tell me where to go.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Hmmm, I googled for that part number but couldn't find anything
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 My bad. I also typed it in at the site of Fulton Radio Supply (in Lansing, one of those real deal shops) and also MCM, where we Reatta fellows get the belts for our old tape decks (another real shop but it's like national), but didn't find anything. You may very well have to improvise. I'd help you out if I had an extra IPC. Well, I do, but it's an '89 and that wouldn't help you much.Someone has to have a blown IPC that could hook you up with a bulb.
Guest crtnrds Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 I have an '89 parts car. Does anyone have a '90/'91 IPC that they're willing to part a bulb from?
Guest crtnrds Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 While we're on the subject, does anyone know if the ignition module on the '90 is the same as the '88 &'89? My '90 has some cooling fins but I don't know if it's basically the same.
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 The coils should be the same, if they're both stock (the square towers). They should interchange.I try not to go off on topics, but you know, the Delco coil is a much better replacement, if that's what you're doing
Guest crtnrds Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Yea, I know, I might do that when I get the bugs worked out. But for now, I have an '89 parts doner. My question was is the IC MODULE the same, other than the cooling fins on the '90?
Guest F14CRAZY Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 I don't think I've noticed these fins before, but it'll work in place of it just fine
