Looking for running board mat removal techinque. I need to remove the dried out old mats from the running boards of my 1939 Buick Model 41. Any guidance you could give me would be appreciated. Thank you for any help you can pass along.

Thanks again,

Richard

Dear Richard:

I needed to do the same thing so I could send the running boards for my 1938 Special to Hunley Acuff for remolding. The technique I used was a wood chisel and a mallet. The old rubber cuts about like wood, but this will take you about 8 hours work. After I had completed the chisel work, I had them sand-blasted, then sent them to Acuff.

My wife laughed at me when they came back, because I was like a kid with a new toy at Christmas. They were actually NOS (and absolutely perfect) when he got done.

Several years ago I sent my 40 running boards to Hunley to be rodone. I tried chiseling off the old rubber, after 2 hrs and a BIG mess. I sent them to hunley where for an extra 75. he cleaned them off, he told me he burned the old rubber off. Considerinf the time and mess it was well worth it. The boards looked like they just came off the dealers parts shelf.

Hunley Acuff lives in Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. Give the internet white pages "Hunley Acuff" and "Georgia" and you should find him. He sometimes comes to Hershey.
