noah_fexx Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 I saw a Riviera which was from circa early 70's and the badge said "Riviera" and under that it said "by Buick". I was wondering about the thinking behind this. Was it at a time when the name Buick may have been tarnished and they didn't want to mention it too heavily? I also wonder if you know of any other models like this, or any which Buick isn't mentioned at all?
Roadhog Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Noah, I think it was just a marketing ploy intended to promote the Riviera as a new concept in luxury cars, not only was it a "Riveiera" but it was by BUICK, what nore could you want?
FireballV8 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 When the Riviera was introduced in 1963 it was a Buick Riviera, but in 1964 it became the Riviera by Buick, it was basically just advertising marketing to help make it an exclusive car.
Guest Dynaflo2 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Oldsmobile went one step further when it came out with the Aurora. I don't think there is any badging on that car that says "Oldsmobile". Only on the end of the trunk lid does it even say "Aurora". When introduced, the car was a pretty radical departure from the standard stuff Olds offered. As I heard it at the time, they figured the Aurora would do better on its own reputation than if it were promoted as an Olds. Alas, both are now history.
Roadhog Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Keith, Yeah I remember those <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> "OPEL" <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> cars, but certainly they didn't claim they were "BY BUICK"?????? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Rawja Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 The Reatta badge below the glove box states: "Reatta by Buick"I suppose it can go either way, to imply that the vehicle is something special or quite the opposite as in "Cimarron by Cadillac".
